The Blood Management Specialist provides physician ordered autologous blood recovery, component therapies, and related perfusion services throughout the UPMC Health System and within BioTronics Inc.'s client base. The BMS reports to Manager, Blood Management Specialist and in the clinic reports directly to the physician ordering the service. This individual is required to travel from site to site and to manage various perfusion related activities. In addition, the individual will participate in a rotating on-call schedule.

  • Filing of appropriate records, both with the institution serviced, as well as BioTronics corporate office.
  • Maintain continuing education and clinical competencies. Assist with orientation and training of new staff, perfusion students or interested personnel.
  • Obtain 5 CEU's per year.
  • Support corporate contractual obligations with various institutions by contributing to the successful execution of those services.
  • Participate on one hospital/or BioTronics committee.
  • Trained and able to use the PeriApp database.
  • Responsible for completion of quality assurance protocols as established by the perioperative blood management program and each client institution.
  • Maintain optimal communication, close cooperation, and consultation with attending physicians.
  • Maintain continuing education and clinical competencies.
  • Maintain proficiency with the operation and maintenance of a variety of autologous blood equipment and procedures such as autologous cell salvage, production of concentrated platelet rich plasma (PRP), as well as other technical advancements in the field of autologous blood therapies
  • Seek new business opportunities related to the services provided.
  • Provide autologous blood therapy services as required, including set-up of autologous blood therapy devices according to established policies and procedures
  • Responsible for accurate and timely documentation of procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory and equipment by ordering and initiating service request. Assist with the transport and introduction of equipment.


High School diploma.Associate degree and experience with autologous therapies such as blood recovery, component therapy and other perfusion duties.Distinct knowledge of blood recovery and component therapy devices.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
