Directs and coordinates pharmacy department clinical programs for the UPMC Hospital division across its inpatient facilities. This includes the planning, development and implementation of a system-wide formulary and clinical pharmacy programs for the UPMC Hospital division. The Director will identify opportunities and implement system-wide quality programs designed to achieve goals and support reporting of clinical, operational and financial outcomes. The Director will work closely with UPMC Pharmacy business leaders including the Vice President of HC Pharmacy and the Pharmacy leadership at UPMC Health Plan in order to develop a strategic formulary that leverages clinical and business practices within the UPMC. The Director will analyze systems and resources to maximize their effectiveness, review the financial performance of the service line and develop innovative models of pharmaceutical care.


  • Actively participates in system-wide interdisciplinary committees related to pharmacy services and hospital clinical programs.
  • Advocates for the role of the pharmacist on the patient care team at UPMC.
  • Collaborates with local Pharmacy Directors and Clinical Pharmacist Managers, and Pharmacy Service Line associates to develop, implement, and evaluate impact of new and/or modified clinical pharmacy services and programs based on emerging trends, new regulatory requirements, and/or advances in patient safety.
  • Ensures adequate, correct, and updated formulary information is available for UPMC clinicians and associated stakeholders (ex. HC Pharmacy) via new and/or existing communication mechanisms.
  • Ensures work and requests of System P&T and its associated Subcommittees are completed for implementation in the electronic health record (Cerner).
  • Identifies opportunities to improve patient outcomes through clinical pharmacy programs or operational/technology innovations via connection to local, regional, and national pharmacy and healthcare organizations and regulatory/accreditation body review participation, engagement, and benchmarking.
  • Manages health system annual policy review in collaboration with Operations Coordinator to ensure appropriate regulatory and accreditation body requirements are met and input of local UPMC Pharmacy sites are incorporated.
  • Plans and facilitates quarterly, monthly and/or bi-weekly meetings of the System P&T Committee and its related Subcommittees and workgroups, including agenda planning, meeting logistics, and ensuring updated participation/membership and information flow to and from current and new UPMC sites.
  • Recruit and manage qualified personnel to serve in the Pharmacy Service Line.
  • Responsible for creation, review, and dissemination of appropriate outcome, process, and economic metrics, relevant to UPMC vision and mission and external benchmarking, to demonstrate value of formulary decisions, clinical pharmacist contributions to patient care, and pharmacy services related to safe and effective use of medications and pharmacy resources.
  • The Director will also stay updated on literature and actively participate in professional organizations at the local, state and national level to contribute knowledge about pharmacy practice and management, develop strong programs and measure performance against internal and external benchmarks.
  • The Director will analyze systems and resources to maximize their effectiveness, review the financial performance of the service line and develop innovative models of pharmaceutical care.
  • Works with PSL clinical faculty, Pharmacy Directors, and System/local P&T Chairman to ensures appropriate clinical expertise is involved in formulary document review and comment.


Educational/Knowledge Requirements: 

  • Currently Licensed Pharmacist with a PharmD or Master's degree in pharmacy administration/management/, minimum of 5 years of experience in hospital pharmacy administration/management. PGY1 or PGY2 residency preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrated equivalent leadership (Assistant Director level or higher) experience will be considered.
  • Analytical and management ability necessary to establish, prioritize and execute goals and objectives.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills necessary to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with medical staff, administration, and other management personnel, interact with UPMC and external peers and communicate with vendors.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to function as a team member within the department and the health system.
  • Ability to operate pharmacy information systems and personal computer applications as required.
