UPMC is hiring a Research Specialist to support a 20 year long, longitudinal, fast-paced, and productive study that exams many facets of youth at high-risk for developing bipolar disorder.

The Research Specialist role is central to the collection of research data, both in the field and in the office. Additionally, the employee must be well organized in order to complete all data collection, prepare a summary narratives, formulate tentative psychiatric diagnoses to be presented to the psychiatrists to confirm diagnoses and finalize data to be submitted to the data team, all in a timely fashion.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to easily engage and build rapport with staff and study participants, as well as, possess the ability to take initiative and problem solve in the research lab environment. The candidate will have the ability to work independently and operate well as a team member in the academic research setting.

This position is grant funded.


Independently execute job functions for research protocol(s). Collect and gather research data for research project.

  • Independently execute job functions for research protocol(s) including recruitment, scheduling appointments, obtaining written consent forms, collecting data by conducting phone or face to face interviews for research project(s).
  • Collaborate with senior research personnel regarding recruitment, data collection, outcomes of interviews, reports according to the needs of the study.
  • Maintain a professional and respectful manner with colleagues, supervisors and study participants.
  • Other duties as designated by Clinical Research Manager and Principal Investigator.
  • Work independently and in a team structure to effectively prioritize and complete tasks.
  • Maintain flexibility in schedule to meet research deadlines.
  • Attend weekly meetings with Clinical Research Manager and update supervisor regarding study progress and problems.
  • Able to interview study subjects in an office setting or in subject's homes.
  • Must be able to maintain a flexible schedule, conducting one to three research interviews per week, primarily, in people's homes.
  • Ability to respond to work requests as designated by supervisors.
  • Contact subjects to confirm appointments.
  • Assist Clinical Research Manager and other relevant staff in all levels and phases of research project.
  • Ability to complete duties effectively in a timely fashion with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Oversee the recruitment and retention of subjects using informed consent procedures.
  • Record for test-retest reliability required to maintain diagnostic consistency at 80% agreement.
  • Ensure that all interviews, assessments, documentation are of the highest quality and legibility, and are completed in a timely fashion with no greater than five outstanding cases at any given time.
  • Achieve a high rate of success in contact and completion of interviews.
  • Responsible for prompt identification for possible interventions based on research assessment results.
  • Contribute to implementation of computerized subject tracking systems.
  • Contact subjects and schedule follow-up interviews.
  • Ability to contact subjects, through various methods, who are hard to reach due change of address or telephone number.
  • Perform in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in psychology, neuroscience, sociology or related research field.
  • Minimum of one year of work experience in a research project and/or related clinical setting is required.
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
  • Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • CCM training is required within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance

Salary Range: $15.58 to $24.54 / hour
