UPMC is hiring a Research Associate who will be working in a fast paced environment as part of a team with medical patients interested in clinical research participation. The Department of Gastroenterology research specializes in patients with liver disease.

The Research Associate is an integral part of the team and will be p
roviding clinical research care to patients ages 18+. Additional responsibilities include: blood and specimen collection, processing and shipping biological samples, obtaining subject vital signs/weight, basic testing, and obtaining basic information. The role will also interact with various outpatient and hospital departments and enter data in to multiple databases.

This position is grant funded.


Assist in the execution of research protocols and services. 

  • Contact and schedule potential participants from a designated pool of individuals who have agreed to be contacted for research studies.
  • Conduct subject searches to locate subjects who are unable to be contacted.
  • Explain research protocol and obtain informed consent from participants.
  • Conduct on-line and/or library searches as needed by the PI as necessary.
  • Perform phone interviews for research project protocol(s) as needed.
  • Maintain and update subject information database.
  • Conduct interviews with research participants under supervision as needed.
  • Assist physician with examinations, diagnostic procedures and treatments.
  • Administer medications including oral, SQ, IM.
  • Document all activities/interventions, patient/family responses, medication dispensed/prescribed, etc in the medical research record. 
  • Promote wellness by providing patient education materials, communicating physician advice/instructions. 
  • Comply with all policies and procedures.
  • Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e. OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health).
  • Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data. 
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
  • Maintain and stock research supplies.
  • Maintain subject specific research charts.
  • Other duties as required for research studies as requested by the research team.


  • Bachelors Degree in psychology, neuroscience, counseling, sociology or related research field or current enrollment in a related Bachelor's Degree program with direct experience in a research environment required.
  • 2 years of clinical research experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
  • Prior related work experience in a research setting preferred.
  • Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred.
  • Phlebotomy skills are a plus.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 34
  • CPR preferred based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • IATA certification preferred within 30 days of hire.
  • CITI modules preferred within 30 days of hire.

Salary Range: $14.61 to $22.93 / hour
