Developmental Specialist II - Special Education (Casual)

Description

Provide daily instruction to patients on the WPIC inpatient units. The Developmental Specialist II will assess all patients, plan their lessons, monitor their progress, and communicate with their home school. In addition, the Developmental Specialist II will communicate with the treatment team on a regular basis regarding each patient's classroom performance and behavior.

Responsibilities:
  • Write daily lesson plans for each student assigned. Plan for Monday thru Friday are due by the end of the previous week.
  • Inform school of student's progress, including discharge summaries.
  • Communicate on a regular basis with the student's home school.
  • Conduct instructional sessions for 3 hours each day.
  • Observe and record academic progress and patient behavior. Present information at treatment team meetings each week.
  • Collect and report a detailed school history to help in the formation of educational recommendations.
  • Attend meetings/staff development as required and present educational information as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Special Education, or Child Development with one (1) year of relevant teaching experience required;
OR 
  • Bachelor's degree in behavioral health field and three (3) years of relevant teaching experience required;
OR 
  • Master's degree in Education, Special Education, or Child Development required with six (6) months of relevant experience required. 
  • Ability to relate sensitively to students and be consistently responsive to their needs. 
  • Emotional stability, maturity and show evidence of good judgment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Effectively communicate information to other staff members, parents, visitors, etc. 
  • Supervisory and leadership skills strongly preferred. 
  • Successful teaching experience with students with special needs as documented by supervisor evaluations.  
  • Previous experience in a treatment setting preferred.
  • May in the course of their job duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with medications is allowed.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Pennsylvania Teaching Certification in Special Education or Emotionally Socially disturbed within 8 weeks of hire required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC) - CCM training is required within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 48 Continuing Professional Education with renewal - Completion of 180 continuing professional education hours every 5 years to maintain an active teaching certification required. Maintain all Pennsylvania Department of Education(PDE) requirements, including any new requirements deemed necessary by PDE.
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
