Job Description/Summary/Objectives:


UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside seeks a Manager, Science Writing to review and analyze complex medical research and data, document and edit scientific discoveries, and spearhead promotion of these discoveries through journal publication or media. Work with investigators and research staff to evaluate and review scientific contributions for the purpose of furthering the science of the field through articles, presentations, and press releases. Apply scientific research background and biomedical expertise to report, review, and edit documents, videos and other multimedia on advanced scientific topics. Analyze and summarize medical discoveries made by physician scientists at UPMC in a technically accurate and concise manner. Ensure accurate and precise reporting of major scientific events, including medical discoveries and medical emergencies in which UPMC physicians play a leading role. Attend scientific conferences and interpret the research posters and presentations for the media. Stay abreast of important advances in assigned scientific disciplines, including keeping up to date with scientific literature and monitoring relevant news coverage on an ongoing basis. Host international science and medical journalists at UPMC to witness scientific research being performed at the institution. Serve as an integral member of UPMC's senior crisis communications team and serve a critical role in crisis situations involving medical issues, research ethics and use of animals in laboratory research must be available on designated evenings and weekends for on-call duties. Apply knowledge of the biomedical research enterprise to promote and protect UPMC's reputation on issues related to basic and clinical advances. Build and maintain relationships with internal clients at UPMC and local, regional and national health and science reporters and editors.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications and Licensure/Certification:

-Master’s degree in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Science, or related field,
-Two (2) years of science writing, media relations or related experience translating scientific/medical language to a lay person's understanding;
-writing and editing news articles, press releases, or technical documents;
-responding to physicians, scientists or journalists on advances in biomedical research;
-soliciting comments from experts on major biomedical advances;
-providing clients with strategic counsel;
-working with research institutes or academic medical centers;
-studying and researching in health-related sciences;
-attending scientific conferences and interpreting scientific literature;
-identifying and promoting research of interest;
-using social media or other digital communications to promote science news;
-building and maintaining relationships with health and science reporters and editors.
