Join us as a Manager for Strategic Planning, Corporate and Special Projects. As part of the Corporate and Special Projects Group, you will work directly on behalf of senior leadership to inform strategy, produce corporate communications, advanced analytics, and data visualizations, and enhance UPMC’s community health improvement efforts. You will play a vital role in conducting and coordinating key functions including strategic analysis and research, community health needs assessments, strategic and business plans, and presentations and publications for Executive, Board, and community audiences. In this role, you will have extensive client and external constituent interaction. 

  • Manage a portfolio of multiple projects.
    • Independently designs and completes complex projects.
    • Identifies and frames project needs.
    • Appropriately scopes and resources projects, recognizing both client needs and value of deliverable to organization.
    • Manages multiple projects concurrently and effectively.
    • Prioritizes ongoing and ad hoc projects.
    • Communications and collaborates with peers to streamline work and eliminate duplication.
    • Effectively represents department at outside meetings and leads internal work groups based upon knowledge of data and projects.
    • Develop new capabilities and maintain departmental data infrastructure.
  • Develops infrastructure and maintains key data sources to be prepared to respond quickly and effectively to strategic priorities.
    • Develops new approaches to researching and presenting information.
    • Evaluates and implements new or improved technical capabilities.
    • Ensures cross training to enhance the entire department’s skills.
    • Leverage industry contacts and knowledge to identify and apply external best practices.
    • Identify and document new industry and market trends.
  • Develop and mentor staff to improve level of Department’s skills and to achieve project team and business unit goals.
    • Supervises, trains, and mentors standing and ad hoc teams (often including members outside of the Department). Develops and recruits talent.
    • Provides mix of projects.
    • Provides timely candid oral and written performance feedback.
    • Using an “apprenticeship model,” teaches/facilitates development of analysts’ skills including technical knowledge, analytic skills, business communications, departmental and UPMC protocol, meeting preparation and participation.
  • Support Director/Vice President and other senior executives.
    • Works to understand current organizational priorities and objectives.
    • Assists in designing and executing solutions including reports and presentations that meet the organization’s strategic objectives.
    • Engages, probes and clarifies to create focused, value-added products
    • Complete special projects as assigned.
  • Administrative
    • Complete Department and other assigned administrative responsibilities in a timely and effective manner.
    • Helps draft departmental policies and procedures as assigned.
    • Participates in leadership and development activities and utilizes learnings on-the-job.
  • Performs in accordance with System-wide competencies/behaviors.


  • Masters level degree in Business Administration, Health Administration or a quantitative field of study (e.g., mathematics, economics, sciences, finance, etc.) with a minimum of five years of relevant experience (e.g., strategy, planning, business development, quantitative decision support, finance) required; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree with seven years of experience. 
  • Prior experience should include project management (developing work plans, tracking progress, coordinating teams composed of individuals from multiple departments, completing deliverables, etc.) 
  • Prior experience in advanced analytics (manipulating complex datasets, probing deeply to interpret data, communicating complex analytical concepts in easy to understand ways, etc.).
  • Prior experience in research (e.g., identify key dynamics within a market).
  • Prior experience in presentation with external audiences.
  • Experience as a supervisor is required.
  • Experience in a consulting, corporate or competitive strategy, or service line management environment is preferred; some operational experience is preferred.
  • Exceptional Excel and PowerPoint skills are required.
  • Experience with SPSS (or other statistical packages), ArcGIS (or other mapping software), COGNOS, market research tools and/or other relevant software packages is preferred.
  • Strong data visualization inclination with a willingness to experiment with innovative data display techniques.
  • Must possess strong project and people management skills, exceptional analytic and problem-solving skills, superb writing/presentation/communication skills, and have meticulous attention to detail. 
  • The ideal candidate is both business savvy and research-oriented. 
  • Interest and expertise in public health preferred.
