Description

ANCC Magnet designated UPMC Passavant is hiring a full time Advanced Patient Care Technician (APCT) to help support the 4 North Progressive Care unit at our McCandless location.

 

Patient Care Technicians are essential partners in that mission, enhancing the patient experience at UPMC with positivity and integrity. Nursing support staff give personal care to patients with an emphasis on dignity and respect, striving to make each patient feel as comfortable as possible during their hospital stay. Patient Care Technicians also provide invaluable aid to nurses and doctors on the floor by completing important skilled tasks such as checking vital signs and glucose levels, performing EKGs and blood draws, and much more.


As APCT on this unit, you will work in a dual role as a patient care support worker and a unit-based support worker. You may at times help with administrative work including scheduling and patient service.

 

About the 4 North

  • 4 North is a medical progressive care unit that includes 30 private beds.  The patient population consists of those individuals requiring a higher level of care than can be provided on the medical-surgical floors but do not require an ICU level of care. 
  • Typical patients seen on this unit are: post heart catheter, post defibrillator/pacemaker insertion, CHF, anyone with a cardiac arrhythmia requiring medicine to control heart rate, stroke, high oxygen requirements and those on IV insulin drips.
This position requires at least 6 months of Nursing Assistant, Patient Care Technician, or direct patient care experience for consideration. The shift requirements for the Advanced Patient Care Technician position are rotating shifts, 12 hours in length, including weekends and Holidays.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, and Foley care) AND at least four of the following business unit identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter or IV catheter removal.
  • Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living. Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
  • Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN. May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Rotating shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays are required.
  • 6 Months of Patient Care Technician, Nursing Assistant, or diret patient care experience required
  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of first year of clinical work in a nursing program. 
  • Successful completion of basic information system training. 
  • Microcomputer experience preferred. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.  
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred. 
  • Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency required. 
  • During their duties may be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients. 
  • Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another

 

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire ACLS preferred. 
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance. B
  • asic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
