Research Principal

Description

This position is in the Laboratory of Dr. David Volk (https://www.tnp.pitt.edu/faculty/) in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Volk’s lab seeks to understand the neural circuitry of the prefrontal cortex and the alterations of this circuitry in schizophrenia. This position will be part of Dr. Volk’s VA Merit Award through an Intergovernmental Personnel Act agreement. The primary project for this VA grant involves the use of immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy to study the role of microglial phagocytosis of dendritic spines in schizophrenia.

Under the general direction of Dr. Volk, this position will be responsible for, design research studies, utilize confocal microscopy, conduct mRNA and protein studies on rodent, monkey, and human postmortem brain tissue, collect data and perform data analysis. Prepare presentations and reports describing results. Train and supervise staff and students This core position involves managing a molecular biology and brain tissue processing lab.

This position is grant funded. 

Purpose:
Provide advanced level research and/or clinical and administrative support to the study. Mentor, train, & assist with supervising junior research staff.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree required preferably in psychology, neuroscience, counseling, sociology, or related research field.
  • Minimum of two years of work experience in a research project and/or related clinical setting is required.
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required. 
  • Working knowledge of research methodology required.Prior supervisory experience preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 34
