Senior Manager, Strategic Initiatives - Health Plan



Are you ready to work on the cutting edge of technology & healthcare delivery?  Are you excited to be part of a community of people who care deeply about changing healthcare through innovation?  As one of the few integrated delivery & financing systems in the country, as well as a leading academic medical center & health system, UPMC is uniquely positioned to move quickly and creatively in the telehealth space.  The Telehealth Strategy & Solutions team at UPMC Health Plan is working to leverage telehealth technologies & applications to make health care delivery more convenient, lower cost, and more member-centric.  As the Senior Manager of Strategic Initiatives, you will be part of our team of rock stars working to identify, develop & prioritize a portfolio of telehealth initiatives, as well as leading the implementation of those new strategies & solutions for the UPMC system.  The initiatives will range from new reimbursement arrangements, network engagement strategies, new clinical use cases for telehealth, and new product strategies.  You’ll work alongside colleagues in product development, digital health, technology, business transformation, and human-centered design, and have the opportunity to collaborate with business & clinical partners across the UPMC system and beyond. 


  • Research, analyze, and recommend new products, processes, and technology that introduce new capabilities and/or improve robustness of current telehealth practice and member experience. Assess and contribute to strategy and oversee strategy execution, including the assessment of current initiatives and recommendations for process improvements. Work to continuously improve the overall UPMC Health Plan member experience with telehealth as well as UPMC Health Plan book population health. Recommend specific initiatives to improve such experiences.
  • Manage the proposal development process. Evaluate opportunities by facilitating strategic discussions, conducting broad market analysis, and/or working with Marketing Intelligence to gather information. Collaborate with Finance, Health Economics and Business Development Manager to build financial analysis and determine financial feasibility. Synthesize and translate complex analytic, business and scientific information for the research, writing, design and production of a variety of business documents. Produce deliverables which may include: market assessments, presentations, business plans, etc. that describe the proposed initiative or solution and the value that UPMC can bring. Translate discussion and decisions into effective presentations tailored to audience and purpose.
  • Develop the delivery plans for our strategic initiatives, and manage a portfolio of multiple projects from inception through implementation.  Maintain strong relationships with the executive team and work consultatively with them for initiatives to define goals, secure needed resources and gain approvals.  Collaborate with leadership across lines of business and departments like product, network, marketing, population health and quality improvement to develop detailed action plans including milestones, deliverables, resources and risks. Hold teams accountable to milestones, ensuring high quality work is submitted by established deadlines. In some cases there will be large project teams to support the work, and in other cases you may be managing the day to day work.   Complete projects in a timely manner.  Clearly communicate project progress and risk mitigation paths. Develop and monitor key performance metrics to evaluate the success of strategic initiatives and recommendations.
  • Be a subject matter expert for the UPMC system on telehealth delivery, technology, reimbursement, outcomes, and experience. Evangelize telehealth to internal and external stakeholders to get people excited and seeing the value and potential of the technology.  Understand the industry & competitive marketplace around telehealth delivery & access.



  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Public Health, or related required
  • A minimum of ten years of experience in business development (preparing business documents); project management (developing work plans, tracking progress, coordinating teams composed of individuals from multiple departments, completing deliverables, etc.); and advanced analytics (manipulating datasets, interpreting data, communicate complex analytical concepts in easy to understand ways, etc.). or Master's degree and 5 years experience preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of health care insurance or health care industry is preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across internal and external organizations

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    PMP Certification preferred.
