Director, Ethics

Description

As Director, you will be responsible for the planning, coordination, and overall management of the ethics program at UPMC Pittsburgh area hospitals. Additionally, you will oversee and manage the day to day operations, including providing ethics consultation services, ethics education and policy development. You will also plan and co-lead the ethics committees and provide structure and growth to the program.

Responsibilities:
  • Services as a resource medical, nursing, and other staff to increase awareness of ethical issues present with patient care.
  • Tracks and reports on the number and type of cases received.
  • Evaluates trends and effectiveness of consultation services to ensure quality care and staff/patient/family focus.
  • Support and provide consultation for other UPMC entities related to growth and development of their ethics programs and in deliberating cases as needed.
  • Responsible for recommending communication and mediation methods by which staff can effectively resolve ethical conflicts.Reviews periodically the patterns of ethical conflicts and makes appropriate recommendations for policies or practices to reduce or eliminate recurring conflicts.
  • Identifies any potential legal or risk management concerns and alerts the appropriate individuals.Participate actively on the multi-disciplinary team and contributes to patient planning. Interprets to members of the team the significance of the patient wishes and values pertaining to their medical treatment.
  • Plan and co-lead ethics committees and provide structure and growth to the program

  • Collaboration and development of processes and education around ethical situations.Facilitates family meetings to enhance communication among physicians and other health care providers, patients, and families.
  • Plan and co-lead effective ethics committee(s), providing education, case review and initiating policy and development as needed. Expert, specialized focus on clinical ethics consultation training. Develop, implement and execute education trainings and in-services on ethical situations and resolution to key care team members, including consultation providers.
  • Mentor others working in ethics and engage with all the ethics committees in Pittsburgh area.Clarifies issues and generates options for resolution. Facilitates assessment of the pros and cons of possible options. Consults with managers and clinical staff to develop collaborative strategies for conflict resolution.
  • Supervise and direct the medical ethicist(s) to ensure quality, timely and consistent service.Manage and ensure 24/7 coverage of ethics consultation service.
  • Formulates, manages, and monitors the overall goals, direction, programs, and impact of all programs and service offered.Provides ethics consultative services to clinical staff, patients, and families.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in bioethics or related field required. 
  • Formal clinical ethics rotation or fellowship strongly preferred. 
  • Advanced knowledge of medical ethics principles and practices required. 
  • Minimum of 3 years experience providing clinical ethics consultation required.
  • Acute care hospital experience preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Certification in Healthcare Ethics Consultant preferred.
