Description

UPMC Hamot is hiring a Pre-Op Center Assessment Nurse for the PASE department.  This is a full-time position that works Monday through Friday, from 8:00am-4:30pm.  

The Pre-Op Center Assessment Nurse has the authority, responsibility and shift accountability for the delivery of the nursing assessment and overall chart review for all electively scheduled surgical patients.  The Pre-Op Center Assessment Nurse, in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, ensures that everything is set for the day of surgery, prior to a patient showing up for the procedure.

Responsibilities:
  • Intervenes with CRNP from anesthesia as well as doctors offices for any necessary missing elements of clinical care.
  • Fields post-operative phone calls dealing with clinical issues.
  • Completes chart reviews.
  • Reviews all clinical documents associated with a patient to optimize the patient for surgery based on Anesthesia established guidelines.
  • Reviews and discusses any abnormalities in clinical documents with Anesthesiologist as well as surgeons as needed.

Qualifications

The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately with the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit. They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patent's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures. 
  • Minimum 6 months experience is required. 
  • A surgical, nursing background is preferred.
  • BSN is preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments and patients/families. 
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. 
  • Good clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. 
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to leas others in application of the nursing process.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) OR Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
