UPMC Cole is hiring a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to support our OB_GYN practice.

This position is responsible for providing professional medical care for clinic/health center patients under supervision of the physician or advanced practice clinician. The Incumbent will assist providers and staff in coordinating patient care and functions as primary liaison between patients, staff and provider.

This position requires excellent independent judgment in order to prioritize work demands. Tact and diplomacy in dealing with staff, patients and visitors is necessary at all times and must enjoy working with the public. An assertive yet professional manner is required in both written and oral communication. Also required is the ability to follow instructions, identify problems and refer them to the office manager. The ability to maintain confidentiality with regard to patients, co-workers and all job assignments is imperative.


Main Tasks/Duties:

  • Deals with patient needs expeditiously.
  • Answers telephone, screens calls, takes messages and provides information.
  • Obtains authorization from insurance carriers for specialized tests and specialist appointments.
  • Maintains timely patient flow: escorts patient to exam room and orients to surroundings, takes vital signs, documents patient history and reason for visit and prepares patient for anticipated procedure(s).
  • Documents in patient chart appropriately: vital signs, test results, prescriptions called to pharmacy, patient telephone conversations and files processed medical information in patient records.
  • Assists provider with procedures.
  • Implements physician orders.
  • Answers routine medical inquiries and drafts letters.
  • Acts as a resource to patient: informs patient of information as directed by provider and gathers information from patient to present a total picture regarding patient problem/concern.
  • Maintains exam rooms for necessary supplies, materials and equipment. Ensures cleanliness of exam rooms.
  • Educates patients and their families about diagnostic procedures, nutrition and maintenance of health and wellness.
  • Evaluates patient’s needs and determines the urgency of the appointment following medical provider protocol.
  • Schedules patients for surgical procedures and/or appointments in other departments and clinics. Provides patients with basic information on referral physicians and other facilities for further care.
  • Responds to/refers incoming patient treatment-related phone calls. Instructs patients and families regarding medications and treatment instructions.
  • Follows Rural Health Clinic and Charles Cole Memorial Hospital policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Attends staff meetings and participates in professional development activities as directed.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Promotes the philosophy, goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Participates in group meetings.
  • Communicates effectively with coworkers and utilizes feedback appropriately.
  • Develops effective working relationships and collaborative practice with health care teams.

Physical and Mental Demands:
  • Sitting, standing and walking for long periods of time are typical.

  • Ability to operate personal computer, general office equipment and various types of medical equipment.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of twenty-five (25) pounds, kneel, push/pull and reach overhead.

  • Knowledge of what constitutes a medical emergency/acute patient.


  • Pennsylvania LPN license
  • One year experience working in a physician office is preferred
  • OB experience, preferred, but not required. 
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10 and CPT codes preferred
  • Excellent communication skills necessary to effectively interact with patients, family members, visitors and staff members.
  • Basic computer skills necessary to input patient care orders and medical record documentation.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation OR Basic Life Support
