ANCC Magnet designated UPMC Passavant is hiring Casual Patient Care Technician to support our 4 South unit at our McCandless location. As a limited casual PCT, we require 36 hours per every 6-week schedule. You can complete your hours all at once or you can work one shift every 2 weeks.

 

  • About the Unit: 4 South is a surgical progressive care unit.  This unit has 24 private beds.  The patient population consists of those individuals requiring a higher level of care than can be provided on the medical-surgical floors but do not require an ICU level of care. Typical patients seen on this unit are: post vascular surgery, post open heart surgery, post heart cath, post defibrillator/pacemaker insertion, CHF, anyone with a cardiac arrhythmia requiring medicine to control heart rate, stroke, high oxygen requirements and those on IV insulin drips.


Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are vital partners in the patient care provided at UPMC. They work on patient care units and perform a variety of important basic and advanced skills. They work closely and continuously with patients, partnering with nurses and other professionals, to make a big difference in how patients recover and experience their hospital stay. 

The role you will be selected for will be based upon your previous experience. Applicants without previous hospital experience who are hired will be provided--and are required to successfully complete 5-day training course at UPMC Passavant. For this position, 6-12 months experience is required for consideration. 

The work of a PCT is both challenging and very rewarding. The PCT provides routine patient care and support services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and may be directed by the nurse or physician, to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care is always maintained. 


Many find this to be a wonderful life long career. Others may choose to take the time while working as a PCT to become familiar with the wide variety of health care roles they may want to pursue: nurse, respiratory therapist, pharmacist, physical therapist - the list is endless.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living. Assists with physical, respiratory and cardiopulmonary therapies. Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
  • Performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) AND at least four of the following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.
  • Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays and transporting patients.
  • Constructively receives feedback and direction. Identifies and communicates learning needs to the unit director. Takes action to improve knowledge, skills and performance. Requests assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed. Participates in self-review as requested by the unit director.
  • Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN. May apply, monitor and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team. Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence and impairment in the health professions. Cares for patients and self by supporting safety in the workplace. Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues.
  • Strictly adheres to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital related information. Complies with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.
  • Suggests and supports changes within the department. Assumes responsibility for assignment and views problems as challenges. Demonstrates awareness of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department. Supports department-based projects and quality initiatives.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures. Performs assigned work in a timely and productive manner. Completes department clerical functions as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 6 Months - 1 Year experience required
  • Prior direct patient care experience preferred
  • If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of first year of clinical work in a nursing program.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training. Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Nursing Student that has completed one clinical rotation preferred.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency required. May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients. Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hireACLS preferred
