Description
Assist the cytotechnologist in all non-screening activities of the department. Responsible and accountable for the preparation of specimens for final examination by the cytotechnologist and for correlating records. Also includes paperwork such as daily reports and monthly statistics. Requires strict adherence to described laboratory procedures and safety policies.Responsibilities:
- Know and follow all organizational/departmental policies/procedures.
- Follow and maintain all necessary preventative maintenance, quality control and quality assurance schedules, and records as necessary, and report technical problems to Cytotechnologist or manager
- Ensure pap vials needing HPV testing are brought to the Microbiology department along with a copy of the requisition slip.
- Print statistics for each days work. Load Cytyc imager.
- Telephone physician's offices, as required by department procedure to obtain information on incomplete slips.
- Assist in Radiology or CAT Scan for needle aspiration biopsies.
- Check all error codes and make necessary changes to eliminate continuing errors on Cytyc imager.
- Register and accession specimens received in the department according to department procedure.
- Assume responsibility for personal development and education.
- Prepare cytological specimens according to established procedure, by staining and mounting glass slides for microscopic exam and analysis by a cytotechnologist or pathologist.
- Maintain the work areas in a clean, orderly and well-stocked condition, discard and replace all solutions used in the department procedures.
- File all slides, and slips.
- Assume responsibility for personal development and education. Incorporate leading/evidence-based practice in quality/safety into every day work. Commit to high quality, safe work; encourage others to have similar standards. Identify processes/systems that could lead to inefficient practices, unsafe conditions, errors or adverse events. Avoid shortcuts to ensure quality and safety measures are not circumvented. Encourage patient and family involvement in processes involving patient safety. Speak up with other service partners to ensure high quality and safety. Report serious events/incidents per policy.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent Required
- Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
- Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance
