The Director of Research Operations supports the Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI) leadership team in all matters concerning the Department's research operations at a satellite site. The position independently manages day-to-day operations for MWRI research at a satellite site including but not limited to infrastructure and operations, human resources, study implementation (recruitment, consent, regulatory, etc.), and fiscal monitoring. The position also serves as the primary liaison on all operational issues between the satellite research location and MWRI administrative entities involved in the conduct of research.. A member of various leadership committees, the Director of Research Operations also actively participates in and contributes to all activities to facilitate the achievement of MWRI's overall research mission.

  • Standard Responsibilities Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Oversees the clinical studies of the MWRI satellite location clinical research facility, manages personnel, and monitors fiscal and data resources. Serves as the principal liaison to research implementing studies at MWRI satellite location.
  • Collaborates closely with MWRI IT team on all matters pertaining to the improvement of research-related data resources.
  • Serves as primary liaison between MWRI satellite research community and MWRI leadership pertaining to all matters concerning the hiring, promotion, termination and corrective action for research staff, compliance with training and performance review requirements.
  • Assists in the recruitment of new research studies and retention of current research studies through interfacing with faculty on a regular basis.
  • Provides leadership to research administrative staff and serves as a principal liaison to the research community, including faculty at all ranks.
  • Brings any operational issues arising from the research domain to the attention of MWRI leadership and proposes approaches for their resolution.
  • Participates in and contributes to various leadership committees and works with leadership in the formulation and implementation of new policies to improve and expand research operations.
  • Manages research operations at MWRI satellite through close liaison with individual research programs and MWRI scientific and administrative offices involved in the conduct of research.


  • Master's degree in business administration, public health, or science field. Extensive experience may be considered in lieu of advanced degree. 
  • Extensive experience (min 10 years) in the management of multi-disciplinary research or other medical field. 
  • Leadership skills: ability to supervise and manage senior staff members; ability to connect successfully with MWRI?s academic community and serve as a principal resource to that community in all matters pertaining to research operations. 
  • Ability to conceptualize and operationalize  complex issues pertaining to the development and implementation of research at MWRI satellite location(s). Ability to participate in and contribute to executive level decision making concerning the expansion and improvement of research operations. Sophisticated understanding of the optimal use of information technology and its applications specifically to research operations. 
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, analytic abilities and negotiating skills.
