Description

The Director of Clinical Informatics (DCI) is a faculty-level administrative appointment within the UPMC Department of Critical Care Medicine reporting to the Department Executive Committee via the Department Chair.  This position provides the necessary leadership to ensure that the Department and the UPMC ICU Service Center (ISC) make optimal use of data from the UPMC electronic health record to evaluate and improve critical care delivery across the UPMC health system. The DCI supports the Department’s efforts to design and implement systems for performance measurement, data analysis, and data visualization that promote quality, safety, clinical productivity, and patient and clinician satisfaction. Working with physicians and other clinical, administrative, and information technology team members, the DCI provides direction for the design and implementation of novel systems for performance measurement and reporting in support of the quality improvement enterprise; as well as ensuring the continuing education, involvement, and support of physicians and other users. This individual works in conjunction with the UPMC-wide informatics community and works with her/his peers to ensure clinical informatics applications are well-supported throughout the Department and ISC.

 

Duties:

  •       Provide leadership in developing and implementing health information technology (HIT) solutions across the Department and ISC, acting as a focal point for clinical practitioners, clinical database specialists, and informatics programmers to deliver actionable clinical data and to provide tools for efficient data management.
  •       Oversee and facilitate the integration of clinical processes with information technology using tools from clinical informatics, biostatistics, and information science.
  •       Recognize potential barriers to system-wide implementation of new performance measurement and visualization tools and develop strategies to overcome these barriers.
  •        Provide guidance to ICU Medical Directors on clinical decision support, performance measurement, and interpretation of performance data.
  •        Direct physician efforts toward establishing new models of care enabled by the electronic health record and information technology.
  •        Collaborate with existing research centers in the Department.
  •        Oversee the Department’s ICU registry, including updating the registry’s data elements, making targeted expansions of the registry, and managing use of the registry for quality improvement and research.
  •        Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  •        Board certified in critical care medicine with active license.
  •       Additional formal training (e.g. Master’s degree) in medical informatics, epidemiology, biostatistics, or computer science strongly preferred. Background and experience with major EHR vendors, FHIR, HL7, JAVA, python, R, business intelligence software, also preferred
  •        Demonstrated ability to establish and build strong relationships across a broad range of personality types and skill levels.
  •       Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clinical and information technology personnel verbally and in writing.
  •        Excellent leadership and teaching skills to direct others and maintain a common vision for project objectives.  Must be a motivator.
