Plumber (Mercy Hospital)


To perform all work related to plumbing within the UPMC Mercy hospital. Shifts vary / rotate, including weekends and holidays. 

  • Must be able to rotate all shifts, weekends and holiday work schedules.
  • Repair and replace all piping systems, including gas, steam, air, oxygen and nitrogen, etc. Inspects all connections and other parts of system for leaks, noting gauge readings to detect loss of pressure. Replace defective pipe by cutting, bending, threading and assembling pipe.
  • Fit valves, couplings and other specified parts and fittings to pipe sections by screwing, bolting, or soldering. Seal connections by forcing seal material into joints with pneumatic caulking hammer or yarning tool. Cut passage holes in walls and floors, through which pipe is to pass, with an electric hand drill and narrow-blade saw.
  • Estimate material requirements and prepares requisitions. Prepare daily and monthly time sheets and various other written reports as requested. Responsible for clean up and removal of plumber's supplies and equipment from work area.
  • May be requested to carry a pager as deemed necessary by management.
  • Solder and caulk leaks and broken pipes. Open clogged drains with plumber's snake or vacuum plunger and thaws frozen pipes. Replace worn washers or other parts in leaky valves on taps.
  • Attach pipe assemblies to walls or ceilings with brackets or hangers. Install plumbing fixtures and connects them to outlet and inlet pipes by fitting gaskets, couplings, traps and valves, and soldering connections to seal joints.
  • Install pipe assemblies and plumbing fixtures. Screw threaded pipes and fitting together with adjourning pipe assemblies. Bolt flanged sections and solders or caulks connections to make them water tight.
  • Inspect, install, repair and replace pipes, fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain the heating, water, gas and drainage systems of the hospital with a consciousness of safety hazards and cost containment efforts.
  • Repair and perform service and preventive maintenance work to all forms of hospital beds, carriages and stretchers.
  • Plan installations by studying blueprints and work sketches to determine kind and size of pipe to use and special fitting necessary. Mark cutting and bending lines with chalk and cuts pipe along layout markings with pipe cutter or hacksaw. Remove burrs or rough edges from pipe with a reamer. Cut thread on pipe with hand or powered pipe threading machine and bends pipe over block by hand to produce corrective curvature.


  • High School graduate or equivalent is required.
  • Trade or vocational school graduate is required.
  • A four year apprenticeship or equivalent on-the-job training is required.
  • Must possess the ability to move throughout the facility's various buildings, roofs, tunnels and confined spaces.
  • Must possess the ability and knowledge to operate and maintain power equipment/tools, both stationary and portable, pertaining to the maintenance field.
  • Must be able to perform all forms of appropriate maintenance work or repairs on various forms of ladders, scaffolds, man lifts and safety equipment in order to complete work assignments at extreme heights.
  • Must have the ability to install/repair water supply piping, fixtures and fixture traps, soiled waste and vent piping, storm water piping and sprinkler piping.
  • Must have good knowledge and ability of soldering, brazing, pipe threading, all methods of installation of copper, black iron, galvanized, victaulic and plastic piping.Must be familiar with all State and/or municipal plumbing codes.
  • Must have the ability to move/position and work in confined and/or elevated locations under widely varied ambient temperatures, while working with trade tools and/or equipment.
  • May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with medications is allowed.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Allegheny County Plumbing license preferred.Stationary Engineer license (City of Pittsburgh) preferred.
