Are you a recent RN graduate interested in working at Magnet designated UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital? Only 7% of hospitals nationwide have achieved Magnet designation… and we’re one of them! For more than a century, UPMC Magee has been caring for patients through all stages of their lives, and we are looking for the next talented employee to join our team.

The Graduate Nurse Critical Care/Surgical Services Rotational Program includes the ICU/Stepdown, Surgical Services, and Emergency Departments, and is designed to prepare new RNs for a career in nursing through an introductory role. The program provides evidence-based care and practices to the standards set by their professional organization. It is a program designed to prepare you for a career as a RN in one of these specialties.

The program begins in August 2020 and consists of six months of select didactic and clinical experiences. During this program you will rotate through the following areas: ICU/Stepdown (4800), Surgical Services, and Emergency Department

ICU (4800)

ICU- 4800 is a 14-bed critical care unit serving adult medical and surgical patients. A fast-paced acuity adaptable ICU, 4800 cares for all types of patients at Magee other than infants, ranging from those needing critical care interventions to those in stepdown condition; we work with a large number of post-surgical patients who are being seen for a variety of specialties, and we frequently partner with RNs from Labor & Delivery to provide care for critical antepartum and postpartum patients. We pride ourselves on being an environment that is exceptionally open, welcoming, and supportive of new staff.

Emergency Department

The Emergency Department is a state-of-the-art, 22-bed Level 3 Trauma unit that opened to the public in 2014. The ED handles critically ill patients and other emergency medical issues, including OB/GYN, geriatric, and medical-surgical including bariatric, orthopedic, oncology, and stroke patients. The majority of ED nurses at Magee are trained to perform forensic exams for sexual assault as well. Patient volume and acuity are variable and can change quickly, making the ED an extremely fast-paced, unpredictable environment where rapid problem-solving is necessary to address evolving needs and priorities. The nurse/patient ratio is 1:4. Along with ED- specific educational classes, our nurses are SANE trained through a course offered by UPMC. The field of emergency nursing is exciting and challenging affording you to learn something new each day.

Surgical Services

Surgical Services includes the Operating Rooms (OR) and Pre/Post Operation at Magee. Magee’s OR is fast-paced and exciting- more than 15,000 procedures are completed per year in 14 OR Suites. Surgeries performed in the OR include gynecologic, urology, breast, plastics/reconstructive, joint replacement, bariatric, vascular, and general surgery. The Pre/Post Op Unit at Magee is a dynamic team of nurses who provide top notch care to patients before and after surgery. The unit includes a pre-op call center, 18 bed pre-op area, 22 bed PACU, and a 9 bed Phase 2 recovery area.

The participants will begin their time at UPMC Magee on their first unit for 4-6 weeks, and then rotate through the remainder of the units for the last 4-6 months of the program. The length of the program will total 6 months.

Having a resource pool nurse as a mentor, and having preceptors for each “rotation”, is a fantastic opportunity to learn from many talented nurses and receive a broad education in nursing. At the end of the rotations, you will be matched to a participating unit through a mutual matching process, which will include input and feedback from both the clinical leaders and participant of the program.

Our RNs work a rotating 12-hour schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor.

As a nurse at UPMC, you will find:

  • Competitive wages, with the highest BSN differential in the greater Pittsburgh area
  • An incomparable benefits package, including tuition reimbursement
