About the Program

The Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) provides experience in research laboratories for undergraduate students in Health Sciences who wish to learn the rationale, design strategies, methods and other aspects of biomedical research as research interns.  Participants will acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical training in research and scientific experimentation as they engage in studies under the direct supervision of investigators who faculty and staff of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and University of Pittsburgh.  Research opportunities are available in the majority of our basic science departments; clinical internship positions are limited.  UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is located in the Lawrenceville area in the city of Pittsburgh.

This year’s program will run from June 1st through July 24th.  The internship will be Monday through Friday, typically 8:30am-5:00pm.


Under supervision of a principal investigator and according to established procedures, the research intern carries out experimental design of assigned research projects.  Research interns also analyze data and prepare either a final report or poster to summarize results.

  • Organizes experimental tests relevant to assigned project and coordinates with animal research technician and other lab personnel as required.
  • Performs various experimental tests according to prescribed research protocol and evaluates test results.
  • Records all data and relevant information in laboratory notebooks and into computer files and conducts data analysis and statistical testing as instructed
  • Performs and records all quality controls instituted to ensure test validity, (i.e., calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment). 
  • Attends laboratory seminars, departmental research meetings and other courses pertaining to the responsible conduct of research.
  • A poster presentation of work performed will be required at the end of the program.


  • High School Diploma is required
  • Currently enrolled in a science based undergraduate program is required
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher is highly preferred
  • Completion of (at least) two semesters of undergraduate course work prior to the start of 2020 program is required
  • Have at least one semester of undergraduate education remaining after completion of the program is required
  • Analytical ability necessary to analyze and interpret test data, maintain records and prepare reports is required
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with departmental research faculty and staff is required
