UPMC Corporate Construction and Real Estate is seeking a thought leader in Healthcare Facilities Planning to collaborate with hospital and system executive leaders.  This individual will work across departments to connect the vision of each hospital and their departments within, to the UPMC global strategy for healthcare facilities in Western Pennsylvania.  In addition to facilities master planning, the Director will also oversee the campus and interior space planning for the 14 UPMC Hospitals in Allegheny county. Innovative solutions for staff optimization, space utilization, and the improvement of the healing environment for the benefit of our patient’s satisfaction and outcomes are key measurements for the role of Director of Planning and Design.

  • Coordinates documentation for Joint Commission Inspections
  • Oversee the UPMC Master Planning Processes.
  • Assess space needs and issues on all UPMC campuses.
  • Responsible for departmental budget.
  • Oversee coordination and maintenance of facility base plans and Life Safety Plans.
  • Oversee development of space programs and schematic design drawings to test fit plans.
  • Responsible for staff management, mentoring, and professional development.
  • Maintain an open relationship with community groups.
  • Steer projects toward IMP goals.
  • Work with PMs to develop RFPs for architectural services and review submissions.
  • Maintain and enforce room size standards.
  • Provide design services to UPMC.
  • Contribute to Capital Construction Budget and 5 year projections.
  • Supervise Facilities Planners, Interior Designers, and Equipment Planners
  • Direct coordination with in-house construction team.
  • Advises on global and regional facilities development strategies.
  • Maintain an on-going knowledge of external regulations - Department of Health and City of Pittsburgh.
  • Lead project planning for large projects of scale
  • Work on a more global aspect with CRE to give identities to ancillary buildings.
  • Request proposals from consultants based on space programs, design drawings and written scope of work. Review and approve proposals for accuracy.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Engineering or a related field is required. 
  • Master's Degree in Business Administration or related field is strongly preferred. 
  • 10 years minimum experience in facilities planning or a related field is required. 
  • Strong project management skills are required. 
  • 3 -5 years of supervisory or leadership experience is required. 
  • Proficient in Autocad, Adobe Acrobat Professional, and Microsoft Suite of Office Products. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop budgets and make accurate budget projections. 
  • Ability to maintain composure, confidence and professionalism in stressful situations. 
  • Ability to negotiate and maintain a high degree of integrity and objectivity with projects. 
  • Ability to produce a space program and subsequent schematic design with a proposed scope of work. 
  • Excellent visual and graphic presentation skills. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
