Oversees operational and system processes as they relate to pharmacy benefits, implementation, training and maintenance for all UPMC product lines. This position is responsible to conduct operational surveillance, vendor oversight, reporting requirements as well as the creation and implementation of new business processes. Must possess analytical problem solving skills, coordinate the work of others and communicate effectively with all levels of management. Work is assigned through the Director of Pharmacy Operations.

  • Design, update and maintain pharmacy operational policies and procedures. Document work flows as needed.
  • Acts as the system administrator for multiple applications used within the pharmacy department.
  • Identifies training and development needs of pharmacy staff.
  • Responsible for data compilation, project tracking and report creation.
  • Oversees the internal audit of operations within the Pharmacy department, coordinating audit activities, related reporting and the implementation of any corrective actions identified.
  • Manage operational and IT related activities and projects with both internal and external staff.
  • Work with internal teams to review and evaluates operational processes to gain efficiencies and ensure appropriate clinical or regulatory standards are being met.
  • Create ad hoc reports and perform data analysis on call trends, clinical review activities, pharmacy claims, overrides and rejections to identify opportunities to increase efficiencies within the department.
  • Serves as a point person within the Pharmacy Operations area for internal and external stakeholders such as the Pharmacy Benefit Manager, quality departments and IT as it relates to pharmacy operations.


  • Bachelor's Degree required.  
  • Extensive related experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in the health insurance or pharmacy industry required.
  • Minimum of two years in a pharmacy benefit programming or account management role required. 
  • Strong working knowledge of the pharmacy industry, including regulatory guidelines, Pharmacy Benefit Management, and Drug Terminology.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects while building strong interpersonal relationships within the department and with other external departments and vendors.
  • Ability to coordinate the activities of multiple teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to re-engineer processes to positively impact productivity in terms of timeliness and accuracy.
  • Working knowledge of various software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Project, Access and Visio.
