Under general direction, plan, design and refurbish interior space on designated UPMC campuses. Formulate a design that is practical, aesthetic and conducive to intended purposes. Interact with department heads, project teams and management to contribute to the construction process.

  • Develop, specify and manage interior designs for capital projects based on the needs of the end user and within the set confines of the current system design standards.Operate as a fellow team member to the project managers during capital construction projects by taking ownership of the procurement and amnagement of interior design, architectural finishes, furniture, artwork, signage (as a part of the hospital way-finding system), and the creation and placement of temporary signage.
  • Work with the hospital furniture vendor to finalize furniture layouts for various space applications.Perform interior design assignments that include, but are not limited to conceptual design, schematic design, design development and construction documents (small scale).
  • Support management with digital presentations, photography, and the Master Planning process as required.Develop drawings, presentations, and cost estimaes and coordinates the design work of A&E vendors and contractors as assigned on medium and large projects and in coordination with Corporate.Maintain a working knowledge of the existing facilities and their utilization on the Oakland and Shadyside campuses.
  • Collaborate with construction management personnel, supply chain management personnel, outside vendors, contractors and design professionals to assure comprehensive satisfaction of the end-user for all projects assigned.
  • Participates in selection of FF&E, color palettes & material presentations, and generates specifications.Coordinates with the end users, fellow associates, and other vendors to achieve plausible design solutions. Leads and directs the work of others in the system.Works with the Program Director, Design to update prioritized areas for refurbishment.Independently performs special projects as assigned. Maintain effective working relationship with physicians and associates.


  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Design or related field is required.
  • 3-5 years of progressive experience required.
  • Keen knowledge of standard concepts, practices, codes and procedures within the fields of healthcare planning, design and construction.
  • Extensive knowledge in AutoCAD 2009-2012 and SketchUp required, along with proficiency in Creative Adobe Suite applications, Microsoft Office Suite of products including Microsoft Project. 
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft accounting software is a plus.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with regard to all job assignments and the ability to carry out all assignments in a timely manner demonstrating initiative and creativity.
  • Extensive knowledge of healthcare interior design standards, trends, furniture, sustainable materials, and innovative finishes is required.
  • LEED accreditation a plus.
  • Experience producing and managing Design Development and Construction Document drawing sets for interior architecture projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with multiple outside vendors and consultants simultaneously.
  • Must be detail oriented with excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer relation skills, both written and oral at a management level.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritize and meet deadlines independently and as part of a project team with accountability for work performed.
  • Must be pro-active, detail oriented with ability to multi-task.
  • Must have positive attitude, be quality minded, and display a wide degree of creativity and latitude.
  • Eagerness and ability to learn and develop in a fast-paced setting.Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Must have an understanding of aesthetics with the efficient and functional use of space along with strong graphic and visualization skills to communicate design ideas.
  • Strong project management, collaboration, organizational and teamwork skills are required while working in a focused and efficient manner.A portfolio

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
National Council for Interior Design Qualifications (NCIDQ) preferred. American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers (AAHID) preferred
