Health Services Researcher


UPMC Health Plan has an exciting opportunity for a Health Services Researcher in its Department of Health Economics (DOHE), located in downtown Pittsburgh at the U.S. Steel Tower.

The Health Services Researcher will collaborate with clinical and administrative leadership across UPMC to effect meaningful change in care delivery. The Health Services Researcher will have expertise in health economics and outcomes research, population health, health services, comparative effectiveness research, epidemiology, or other relevant discipline.

The Health Services Researcher will take a leadership role in the development and oversight of clinical evaluation and design, thus experience in advanced statistical techniques and design of experimental and observational evaluations is required. The Health Services Researcher is a supervisory position responsible for mentoring and developing program evaluation staff as well as directing the workload of the program evaluation team.

This is a customer-oriented position, therefore the Health Services Researcher must be able to effectively communicate results to technical and non-technical audiences as well as clinical leaders and administrators in both written and oral forms.

  • The Health Services Researcher will work closely with senior clinical executives to scope out strategic projects, independently develop evaluation plans, and lead a team of 3-5 analysts to execute and deliver on those plans.

  • Serve as an expert consultant to clinical and administrative leadership during the program design and planning to ensure rigor across the continuum of evaluation.

  • Manage communication and customer expectations with clinical program teams and customers.

  • Oversee and supervise the work of the program evaluation staff and serve as a reference point for questions on a day-to-day basis.

  • Use research and business expertise to prospectively identify opportunity that is amenable to changes in how care is delivered.

  • Design and perform advanced statistical analyses and be able to translate the outcomes for consumption by a non-technical audience.

  • Routinely analyze clinical results, including output from predictive models.

  • Create visually appealing, customer-oriented reports that provide meaningful clinical, quality and financial context to drive changes in care delivery as well as make recommendations based on the findings.



  • Minimum: Master's degree in research, policy, epidemiology, health care management, economics, or a similar, quantitative field. PhD preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of eight-to-ten years of work experience in a quantitative job function; ten years are preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in particularly-relevant program evaluation and design methods or health care business domain (payer/provider) may reduce time-in-position requirements.
  • Advanced Analytics Skill Set: The successful Health Services Researcher can: Apply analytical and statistical software tools to produce complex, quantitative clinical program analysis.
  • Work typically includes the use of statistical analyses, modeling.
  • Demonstrate consistent application of strong problem solving skills in the creation and interpretation of quantitative analyses, and to lead the development of evaluation plans.
  • Interpret and communicate to management and colleagues, verbally and through written reports, the results of complex, quantitative analysis.
  • Ability to design and plan program evaluations, including clinical outcomes analysis and financial (ROI) assessment without supervision is required.
  • Prior experience with clinical modeling or data analysis is required.
  • Demonstrate prior application of analytics methods specifically to health insurance or health care delivery industry data at the intermediate level.
  • General knowledge of business and economic principles strengthens the application.
  • Advanced Analytics Technology Skills: The successful HSR will have: Advanced-level experience using SAS or R to conduct analysis.
  • Demonstrated application of a similar programming language or analysis tool such as SPSS, STATA, or Statistica may also be acceptable.
  • The ability to extract and manipulate data from large, complex data sets with only occasional supervision necessary.
  • The ability to independently apply multiple advanced quantitative analytics, business modeling, and intermediate statistical analysis methods, without supervision.
  • The HSR will routinely use the most advanced quantitative features of Excel as a lower-level tool to supplement the use of advanced analysis tools.
  • Data visualization experience using software packages such as Tableau or ArcGIS is highly desirable, and application to work is expected on a regular basis.
  • Health Economics is a fluid, dynamic, fast-paced environment. The successful employee is comfortable with ambiguity in priorities and is able to maintain professionalism and a team-player attitude in the face of analytical challenges of moderate-to-high complexity.
