University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring a full-time Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner to help support the PEDS Emergency Department. This APP must be available to work all overnight 8-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays. This APP is responsible for providing medical care to patients as delegated by a physician in an inpatient and/or outpatient setting. No on-call required.

Staff Level:
The Staff Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner and a member of the care delivery team. The Staff APP is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Staff APP has responsibility, authority and accountability for the provision of care through supervision by and collaboration with a physician. The Staff APP manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members. The role of the Staff APP encompasses the beginnings of leadership, partnership, collaboration and supervision. The Staff APP establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Staff APP begins to demonstrate a commitment to the community and to their healthcare profession.

APP Fellowship:
The UPMC Pediatric Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship Program is dedicated to advancing UPMC as the premier educational setting for producing excellence in patient care delivery through an innovative and world-class clinical curriculum specifically tailored to prepare the physician assistant and nurse practitioner to practice in an evolving and increasingly complex health care market.The UPMC Pediatric APP Fellowship Program cultivates a mastery of pediatric fundamentals including acute care, ambulatory care, procedure performance, and principles of pediatric subspecialty medicine. The Pediatric APP Fellows are employed, paid learners with the goal to provide the manual skill, fundamental knowledge, and critical thinking skills needed to make sound clinical judgments on a daily basis. Pediatric APP Fellows are being trained to provide autonomous comprehensive pediatric care, within the scope of their license and in collaboration with their supervising physician.
The first one year of employment will consist of the UPMC Pediatric Emergency Department APP Fellowship Program. Candidates with greater than or equal to 3 (three) years' experience within Pediatric Emergency Medicine, will have the option of foregoing the Fellowship Program, but are encouraged to enroll for the most comprehensive onboarding experience possible.

The successful candidate will be placed according to years and months of experience for employment purposes.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide continuity of care in collaboration with other health care professionals as appropriate.
  • Educate patients and families as appropriate.
  • Determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and develops treatment options.
  • Perform minor procedures and assists in surgery, as directed by physician and as defined in written agreement.
  • Provide acute and chronic patient care including taking histories, doing physicals, monitoring therapies, giving injections and medications.
  • Assess patient health status.
  • Triage patient calls and evaluates patient problems.
  • Document patient information and care provided in patient record and maintains department statistics.
  • Initiate and/or completes all administrative tasks and acquires all necessary information, instructions or materials.

Qualifications

• Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families
• Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment
• Handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment
• Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care
• Good clinical judgment
• Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and lead others in application of acceptable standards of practice
• Mobility and visual manual dexterity
• Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients

This position is dependent upon successful attainment and maintenance of hospital privileges, if applicable to the Business Unit practice.

Licensure, Education, Certifications, and Clearances

CRNP: 
• The successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program is required
• BSN, MSN is preferred
• Professional nursing experience and/or nurse practitioner experience is preferred
• Current state RN license and CRNP certification are required
• National certification, eligible for licensure by Pennsylvania board of nursing, eligible for certification as a CRNP by Pennsylvania state board of nursing
• Current CPR certification is required
• Act 33 Clearance will be required 
• Act 73 Clearance will be required 
• Act 34 Clearance required
• ACNP Preferred 
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) OR Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • PA: 
    • A graduate of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the physician assistant (ARC-PA) is required
    • BS or MS candidate is preferred
    • Experience as a physician assistant and/or experience in a clinical setting is preferred
    • Current state PA license certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required
    • Current CPR certification is required
    • Act 33 Clearance will be required 
    • Act 73 Clearance will be required
    • Act 34 Clearance required 
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) OR Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
