UPMC St. Margaret is excited to be hiring a Regular Full-time Histotechnician or Histotechnologist to support the histology laboratory.This role with be scheduled varying day shifts with no weekend or holidays.

*Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. 

  • Histotechnician salaries start at a minimum of $16.64/hr!
  • Histotechnologist salaries start at a minimum of $18.03/hr!

Purpose:

Process and prepare specialized tissue samples per competency guidelines for this level in a clinical laboratory. In addition, monitor level and quality of work performed by others. Evaluate new procedures, techniques and tools. Resolve problems that impact test results.

Responsibilities - Histotechnologist:
  • Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area.
  • Supports academic mission of department.
  • Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.
  • Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
  • Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.
  • Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining
  • Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
  • Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.
  • Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.

Qualifications

  • Histotechnologist:
    • Completion of the educational requirements needed in order to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
    • B.S. degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years,
    • OR a B.S.degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years.
      • Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board-certified medical scientist. 1 year of full-time experience in a histology laboratory preferred.
  • Histotechnician:
    • High school diploma.
    • Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam
    • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years, OR
    • An Associate's degree, OR
    • At least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
    • 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred.
 
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) Certification Required within 1 year of hire:
    • Histotechnologist - HTL (ASCP), OR
    • Histotechnician - HT(ASCP) - Am Society Clinical Pathology
  • Act 34
