Description

The Vice President, Operations for UPMC Hamot is a member of a collaborative executive management group and is responsible for providing executive operational management. The incumbent has the responsibility for establishing standards of operational practices. This position is responsible for developing operational policies and procedures, standards of care and standards of practice of the hospital that result in the delivery of the optimal patient experience. This position oversees the operational performance and financial outcomes of various departments including clinical and nonclinical services. In collaboration with service line Executives and other UPMC management, the Vice President, Operations has responsibility for planning, organizing, coordinating and directing the activities of operational areas that include but are not limited to Surgical Services, Imaging Services, Laboratory Services, Environmental Services, and Nutritional Services. In addition, there is oversight of off campus facilities, project management, construction, maintenance, engineering, safety and security. This position recommends organizational objectives to ensure financial profitability through short and long range planning in order to achieve and maintain growth. The Vice President, Operations, continually evaluates the timely adjustment of organization strategies and plans to meet changing national, state and local needs. Exercises management responsibility in ensuring that efficient services are designed to meet the needs of patients, physicians, the public and the staff. 

Responsibilities:
  • Promotes the delivery of quality care, patient safety, employee and patient experience. Holds management team and staff accountable for maintaining these standards, without exception.
  • Demonstrates an active commitment to a culture of safety through activities such as actively encouraging participation in measurement surveys and developing action plans to continuously improve the culture.
  • Enhances and builds the morale of the medical staff and employees through visibility and the development and maintenance of trust.
  • Ensures the hospital meets or exceeds regulatory and legal standards.
  • Collaborates with President, recommends, develops and updates strategic, long-range plans to support the philosophy and goals of the institution.In conjunction with department managers, sets goals related to productivity, financial, operational and service initiatives. Ensures progress toward goals.
  • Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain effective medical staff relationships, proactive support for physician development.
  • Collaborates with the president of Regional Health Services and UPP leadership.
  • Develops and administers departmental/service line policies, procedures and appropriate standards of care. Reviews department and service line performance and implements changes needed to improve the service while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Maximizes the ability of patients and referring physicians to access the campus, while continuing to help build and maintain patient and referral flow.
  • Prepares annual operating budgets (subject to approval), implements and monitors approved budgets.
  • Effects changes in departments/product line service to maintain and enhance finance financial viability.

Qualifications

Master's degree in business, health care administrations or a related field.
Must possess a minimum of five years of healthcare or hospital progressive management experience and have superior communication, organization and human relations skills.
