UPMC Pinnacle is currently hiring for a Director, Laboratory Services for the Harrisburg, PA area. This position will manage 7 hospital locations and operate all areas of the Laboratory in accordance with guidelines and standards established by the advisory and regulatory agencies as they apply to each area of responsibility. Work in cooperation with the Laboratory Medical Director.

  • Strong knowledge and skills in data analysis and reporting  
  • Demonstrated organizational, problem solving and communication skills  
  • Must be able to plan and manage area of responsibility  
  • Must possess ability to develop financial and other operational systems to accurately control activities  
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills  
  • Must be able to make effective business decisions in challenging situations  
  • Ability to delegate coordination and control of operations to appropriate management staff; collaborate with Medical Staff regarding development and design of services provided.  
  • Must be adept at working with others in situations that require tact, diplomacy, cooperation and the ability to articulate the laboratory departments’ requirements and standards while maintaining positive working relationships within the department and with other areas throughout UPMC Pinnacle, the community, and outside agencies  
  • Direct delivery of Laboratory services provided at all UPMC Pinnacle Hospitals and all decentralized testing provided at primary care offices and other ancillary sites.  
  • Responsible for planning, organizing and directing laboratory operations and services, including phlebotomy services and courier operations that serve a multitude of other departments and clients.   
  • Responsible for planning, organizing and directing Point of Care Testing which serves both inpatient and outpatient locations.  
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies including the College of American Pathologists, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, Food and Drug Administration, American Association of Blood Banks, Joint Commission, Department of Health and National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.  
  • Ensure compliance with hospital and departmental policies.  Write and review and/or revise Departmental policies on a regular basis. 
  • Ensure high patient and customer satisfaction and positive experience across entire spectrum of Laboratory services at UPMC Pinnacle.  
  • Ensure high quality continuum of care across entire spectrum of Laboratory services at UPMC Pinnacle.  
  • Provide leadership supporting continuing education of staff and quality performance of the department for the benefit of the patient, physician and community at large. 
  • Ensure a strong and robust communications process between all Laboratory Managers within UPMC Pinnacle as needed to ensure appropriate dissemination of communications to direct patient care and support staff.  
  • Establish criteria, implement studies and evaluate departmental performance and outcomes in regards to continuous quality improvement control guidelines. 
  • Oversee all personnel actions; scheduling of staff, annual performance reviews, quality assurance and performance initiatives.  
  • Oversee the selection, purchase, and installation of all new equipment and projects  
  • Serve as departmental liaison with hospital administration, physicians and other hospital departments.  
  • Submit annual operating and capital budgets and ensure adherence to productivity and cost control standards of all human and materials resources to meet system objectives.  
  • Prepare and monitor key performance metrics to ensure efficient and effective performance of all laboratory operations  
  • Develop department initiatives, goals and objectives that align with the System Mission, Vision, Values, goals and objectives.

  • Bachelors in Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science or Laboratory related science required. 
  • Masters Preferred 
  • 3 years of experience Required

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
MT (ASCP) or comparable Laboratory certification Required

  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
