Description

The UPMC Health Plan is currently seeking a full-time Risk Control Consultant to help support the Workers Compensation Department. This is a Work From Home position therefore to be successful, a candidate must be located within the Wilmington, Delaware region as he/she will be required to meet with clients in this area on a weekly basis.

This position reports to the Risk Control Manager. Delivers risk control services to clients in assigned territory. Provides technical advice and account information to underwriting business partners for risk assessment and analysis. Works on jobs with varying premium sizes, with workers’ compensation/safety exposures in school districts, healthcare, social services, and manufacturing settings. Autonomous, but still receives oversight and report review from managers.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research for underwriters or clients on class of business, operations, OSHA issues, or any other technical subject requiring similar analysis.
  • Serve as resource to underwriting and claims departments.
  • Conduct loss control surveys/safety program analysis at client locations to determine potential hazards and risk factors to be considered in underwriting/risk selection.
  • Write technically detailed reports that provide a clear assessment of risk and clearly articulate recommendations.
  • Consult with clients on ways to control hazards in order to reduce or prevent injuries. Regularly influence clients to implement recommendations.
  • Analyzes loss information to identify causes and develop recommendations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of regulatory environment and emerging safety issues.
  • Maintain timely, relevant communications with the risk control manager.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with assigned underwriting and claims teams, the broker/agent community, other risk control staff, and with clients.
  • Analyze loss trends, recognize opportunities to provide risk control products and/or services which can help reduce losses.
  • Apply analytical skills to complete claims review.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS Occupational Safety and Health, Physical Science, or Risk Management earned from an accredited program from an accredited college or university required. (Relevant experience in Field Loss Control will be considered in lieu of degree) 
  • 2 years of field loss control or increasing levels of responsibility in related operations. 
  • High level of skill and competency in Microsoft Office Suite software. 
  • Demonstrated project management skills. 
  • Strive to become more effective with making complex technical information and recommendations understandable and clear to audiences with varied levels of technical knowledge. 
  • Consistently influences clients to take action on recommendations. 
  • Listens effectively. 
  • Clearly expresses ideas, recommendations, etc. verbally and in writing. 
  • Asking more open ended questions in risk surveys. 
  • Starting to understand and apply the use of behavioral interviewing techniques. 
  • Fully understands risk control performance standards. 
  • Knows and understands the business plans for each marketing business unit. 
  • Has solid understanding of risk control computer systems applications relevant for their area. 
  • Handles assignments of low to moderate complexity. 
  • Builds credibility with internal and external customers. 
  • Creates customer satisfaction by demonstrating the value of risk control services. 
  • Familiar with the risk control service tools available to clients. 
  • Receives direction and prioritization of workload from management in light of business priorities. 
  • Identifies methods for improving personal productivity. 
  • Developing an understanding of when it is appropriate to bring in the service or technical expertise of our specialist.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Associate in Loss Control Management (ALCM), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), and/or Graduate Safety Professional (GSP)/Associate Safety Professional (ASP)/Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Preferred.
