Under the general direction of the Sr. Director, Materials Management & Logistics (or equivalent) the incumbent in this position is responsible for the optimization and coordination of all DOT/FMCSA regulations, UPMC Courier transportation function across several business lines to ensure efficient and responsive customer service. Leading and coaching a high-performance team and complying with federal, state and local regulations. To synchronize all aspects of functions relating to DOT/FMSA and courier with other operation functions within UPMC. Oversee operations (both in-sourced and outsourced) in an effective manner to meet or exceed established goals around safety, production, service levels, and quality metrics. Manage and lead a high performing, efficient courier transportation network and be able to measure and quantify impact of major business effects on the operations. Accountable for variances to plan in all measured Areas of Performance. Controlling costs through review of reports on OT, service levels, fleet maintenance, etc. Analyze and understand budget variance within operation; investigate and problem solve questionable data/reporting. Review reports make recommendations for changes to improve financial performance.

  • ? To manage, measure, review and take corrective action to ensure that inbound & outbound service quality meets customer requirements and Group standards? To ensure costs are regularly reviewed against agreed budget targets
  • ? Work well in a team environment with a shared vision and common goals? Travel between all UPMC facilities as required ? To organize the operational structure, procedures and resources and ensure effective sourcing, induction, training and development of operational staff to optimize the performance of people
  • ? Capability to influence decision-making and instill credibility in customers, peers, and subordinates through meeting strategic and tactical objectives, deadlines, and budgets? Proven ability to bring efficiency and scale to a multi-site, multi-business unit environment? Manage and create Metrics & KPI?s as appropriate
  • ? Strong critical thinking, organization, and interpersonal communication skills? In depth knowledge of transportation and supply chain software: TMS, ERP, FMS systems? Ability to review and interpret financial models as they relate to budgets and strategic planning
  • ? Leadership, communication, and change management skills. Ability to communicate and persuade at management level? Functional knowledge of all modes of transportation including fleet (private and 3PL), parcel, LTL, TL, courier / mid-market, etc.
  • ? Business Partner/Local Business Team member: Subject matter expert, designs and implements customer logistics solutions, serves multiple facilities/BUs; monthly/quarterly business or other reviews? Optimizes supply chain network across business units by leveraging fixed assets through converting inbound suppliers to collect and generate third party revenue
  • ? Customer Interaction (External): Last mile execution (delivery and related services to customer), related system use, consultative services, sales presentations/part of sales team for local market, procurement interaction, daily distribution of product to the customer? Serves as safety champion within the facility striving for best in class status while meeting or exceeding safety performance metrics


  • Bachelor's degree is required. 
  • A minimum of five (5) years of direct logistics experience required. 
  • SCM, business, accounting, or finance preferred. 
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Proven work experience as a Transportation Manager, or similar role.
  • Solid knowledge of supply chain management.
  • Familiarity with logistics DOT / FMCSA.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to supervise and train staff.
  • Deep understanding of transportation regulations and governmental policies related to transportation.
  • Deep understanding of warehousing, including optimization.
  • Proven experience managing large organizations with at least 35 employees. 
  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills required.
  • Demonstrable problem solving and analytical skills required.
  • Computer proficiency of various business software packages preferred. Demonstrates capability to manage fleet and facility.
  • Recognizes and understands methods to improve operational efficiencies. 
  • Strong communicative, decision making, and interpersonal skills are necessary. 
  • Ability to communicate professionally with various user groups. 
  • Ability to work rotating shifts that include days, nights, weekends, holidays and on call rotations to support 24/7 operations, as needed to assess courier operations.

Driver's License DOT Medical Card Clearance Valid CDL driver's license is preferred
