The UPP Department of Pathology provides comprehensive laboratory services in the areas of clinical laboratory medicine, cytology, and surgical pathology to support patient care and treatment. Our staff includes 19 faculty and over 120 employees who generate nearly one million test results annually.

Magee Women's Hospital and the Department of Pathology were selected by the NSABP Foundation to provide specialized testing for clinical trials under their administration.

The Senior Research Associate position is critical for the oversight of the NSABP project. The Sr Research Associate position is responsible for maintaining the established process flow for cases, the logging of testing samples, and providing test result reporting to the NSABP.  In addition, the position will ensure all documentation is in alignment with FDA requirements.  This position will interact directly with Pathology Administration to provide testing logs and to communicate any issues in the process. 

This position is grant funded. 

Conducts and manages independent research, assists with grant applications and manuscript preparation and trains research personnel. Responsible for supervising Research personnel.

  • Conduct research in a manner that maintains and promotes scientific integrity, and ensure that research projects and environment comply with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Develop research projects including protocol design, budget preparation and justification, data collection and analysis and data storage.
  • Supervise Research Associates, Research Assistants, Research Technicians and monitors budgets.
  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
  • Maintain and expand research expertise by acquiring new research techniques and keeping abreast of new knowledge.
  • Obtain approval for research projects from review committees.
  • Responsible for the planning of manuscript preparation.
  • Responsible for supervising record keeping, inventory and equipment management processes.
  • Effectively communicates progress of research projects via meetings with, and written reports to, research investigators.
  • Plan and implements training programs for Research Associates, Research Assistants and Research Technicians on Research activities and practice including grant application, budget management, data analysis, record keeping and scientific integrity.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of grant applications including budget preparation and justification.
  • Collection of study data and entry into protocol designated database
  • Will function with a high level of autonomy and will assume multiple lead roles in protocol implementation, eligibility related to Central Lab Testing, and data management.
  • Coordinate the transfer of study specimens to/from the Central Lab from either the enrolling site or the NSABP Biobanking Facility.
  • Must have working knowledge of clinical trial standards, IRB preparation, FDA protocols, and Hospital lab guidelines.
  • Will work with UPP Pathology Administrative group, Magee Lab staff & management, and the Chief of Pathology at Magee as necessary to complete RFP responses and budget reviews, implement protocols, participate on study teleconferences or in-person meeting


  • Master's degree in a basic science or clinical research area relevant to research activities to be performed, with at least three years experience; OR Bachelor degree in a basic science with at least five years' experience working within a biomedical research environment, which would include coordinating and executing a research protocol including manuscript preparation.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment in the design and implementation of research projects.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to manage and train research personnel, and to effectively communicate and interface with faculty and hospital staff.
