Medical Records Clerk

Description

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a full-time Medical Records Clerk to support the Department of Gynecologic Oncology!

Under the supervision of the office manager, the Medical Records Clerk will coordinate all clerical functions, as needed, to support this specialty practice. Duties will include, but are not limited to, reviewing medical records, identifying medical records needed for new patients (pathology slides, scans, etc.), coordinating with physicians and hospitals to obtain patient records for transfer, scanning and uploading medical records to radiology and/or pathology, phone triage, sorting and processing files, and additional clerical support tasks. 

The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and proficient computer/office equipment skills. Previous experience working in a medical office and/or an understanding of medical terminology is a huge benefit, as is previous work experience with EPIC.


Responsibilities:
  • Answer the telephone promptly and according to established procedures, utilizing the utmost courtesy and sensitivity. 
  • Independently handle any call, so as to minimize transfers. 
  • Accurately record messages and relay the verbal or faxed information in a timely manner.
  • Review, and if necessary, prepare patient medical records to ensure the charts are current, orderly, and available for the physician's daily schedules.
  • Retrieve film from the file room according to the established procedures.
  • Take the initiative to perform any task that will assist co-workers in maintaining patient flow and office operations.
  • Demonstrate proper operation of the telephone, fax machines, copiers, and computers. 
    • Performs minor maintenance.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills required. 
  • Basic computer skills required. 
  • The ability to facilitate teamwork and demonstrate good organizational skills. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, patients, and medical staff. 
  • Independently prioritizes workload and makes appropriate adjustments to accommodate changes in priorities. 
  • Ability to make independent judgments and to solve basic operational problems.
  • Ability to recognize his/her limitations, and seeks appropriate assistance. 
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks, and to appropriately deal with stress.
  • Previous work experience in a medical office setting and/or a knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of EPIC is a plus.
