We are hiring a Part Time Patient Care Technician to support our Neonatal ICU (NICU) unit. The Neonatal ICU is a 77-bed Level II & Level III critical care facility that provides acute medical, nursing, and respiratory care to critically ill infants; the majority of NICU admissions come from within Magee, however we do also regularly take transports from other regional hospitals. Patients in the NICU may be premature or full term infants who suffer from a diversity of medical issues including (but not limited to) low birth weight, infectious diseases, congenital anomalies, and Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, as well as various complications during labor and delivery. Our unit is the largest NICU in PA offering multidisciplinary care to infants that are premature or have complex needs. Previous ICU and/or pediatric experience is preferred; NICU experience is strongly preferred.

 

Patient care staff in the NICU Unit work on a rotating schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage. Availability for all shifts, including some weekends and holidays, is expected.

Experienced applicants may be hired at the Advanced Patient Care Technician level; those without prior inpatient hospital experience will be required to complete a 7-day training course. (Note: the training course is held over 7 consecutive weekdays during daylight hours.)

 
Responsibilities:
  • Performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, and Foley care) AND at least four of the following business unit identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter or IV catheter removal.
  • Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living. Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
  • Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN. May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of first year of clinical work in a nursing program.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training. 
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
