Manage space allocations for UPMC and ensure that these allocations work with and toward our long term campus goals and corporate strategic plans. Develop space programs, fit plans and scopes of work which can be shared with administration when making recommendations for the best use of campus resources. Supervise facilities planners and coordinate activities with construction project managers. Direct architects, engineers and other consultants as necessary. Coordinates strategic planning activities with corporate initiatives. Acts as the liaison with community groups, city officials and DOH representative.

  • Review project scope with assigned Project Manager to determine amount of PM work required.
  • Maintain an on-going knowledge of external regulations - Department of Health and City of Pittsburgh.
  • Steer projects toward IMP goals.
  • Coordinate and maintain UPMC facilities base plans and Life Safety Plans.
  • Direct UPMC Master Plan Processes.
  • Assess space needs and issues on UPMC campuses - Including meeting with the department requesting additional space, touring existing space and suggesting actions to maximize efficiency in the use of space.
  • Develop space programs and schematic design drawings to test fit plans.
  • Supervise Facilities Planners, CAFM Drafters, and CAD Operators.
  • Contribute to Capital Construction Budget and 5 year projections.
  • Maintain an open relationship with the community groups in both neighborhoods adjacent to UPMC campuses.
  • Maintain and enforce room size standards.
  • Work on a more global aspect with CRE to give identities to ancillary buildings. Prepare Hospital Based Clinic assessments.
  • Provide design services to other UPMC hospitals.
  • Direct coordination with in-house construction team.
  • Coordinate space allocations in ancillary buildings.
  • Mentor and oversee Facilities Planning and support staff.
  • Work with PMs to develop RFPs for architectural services and review submissions.
  • Request proposals from consultants based on space programs, design drawings and written scope of work. Review and approve proposals for accuracy.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Engineering or a related field is required. 
  • 10 years minimum experience in facilities planning or a related field is required. 
  • Strong project management skills are required. 
  • 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience is required. 
  • Previous healthcare industry experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of FGI Guidelines 
  • Proficient in Autocad 2017, Adobe Acrobat Professional, Revit, and Microsoft Suite of Office Products. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop budgets and make accurate budget projections. 
  • Ability to maintain composure, confidence and professionalism in stressful situations. 
  • Ability to negotiate and maintain a high degree of integrity and objectivity with projects. 
  • Ability to produce a space program and subsequent schematic design with a proposed scope of work. 
  • Excellent visual and graphic presentation skills. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
