MWRI is the largest research institute in the US dedicated to women’s health and reproductive biology.  From woman-controlled HIV protection to therapies that could prevent the recurrence of ovarian cancer, we are impacting lives every day. 

This position will be the coordinator responsible for overseeing daily operations for the MWRI vivarium. This position is daylight with rotating weekends (one weekend per month).

Responsible for coordinating the daily operations required for the care and maintenance of research animals and the maintenance of research facilities. Assists research investigators and management with related activities.

  • Supervises and oversees the Animal research facility.
  • Assists as required or requested with animal research studies
  • Provides pre- and post-operative care, experimental lists, and recording of test data; performs and records all quality controls instituted to ensure test validity in accordance with universal precautions.
  • Recruits and evaluates Laboratory Animal Technicians
  • Monitors the operational effectiveness of sectional equipment. Prepares and/or arranges for the repair of equipment, as necessary
  • Develops and conducts on-the-job training and orientation for Laboratory Animal Technicians
  • Performs autopsies on research animals
  • Ensure that all regulations are being followed in caring for and treating laboratory research animals
  • Prepares animals for surgical research, administers pre-anesthetics, intubate airway and administers general anesthesia
  • Responsible for overseeing the lab animal research technicians and cage washers
  • Ensure that the general care, feeding and cleaning of animals housed in the hospital's Animal Research facility is completed


  • High school diploma or equivalent and 6 years of experience in an animal research facility or veterinary hospital ORAA/AS degree with 4 years of experience in an animal research facility or veterinary hospital ORBA/BS degree with 2 years of experience in an animal research facility or veterinary hospital.
  • Thorough knowledge of all pertinent government and regulatory agencies rules, regulations and guidelines for the care and use of animals in research
  • Successful demonstration of the completion of the competencies required by the department/unit
  • This individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department's policy and procedures.
    • Ability to observe and evaluate animals to determine suitability and determine if they are physically well for scientific research.
    • Provide animal husbandry services and assists in surgery and the performance of experiments.
    • Demonstrated ability to administer IM/IV antibiotic therapy.
    • Competent ability to use diagnostic and surgical equipment.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Must be able to lift and restrain large and heavy animals for surgery and removal from facility.
    • Demonstrated ability to utilize computer equipment and various types of data management software.
