Description
This position is at Magee-Womens Research Institute and Foundation. The Senior Accountant will take ownership of the day-to-day management of the Organization’s accounting operations within their assigned areas of responsibility and will work closely with the Accounting Manager to ensure timely and accurate month end and year end close process.
In this role, you must have mastery of your debits and credits and you must be able to proficiently interpret and apply US GAAP to record and report financial transactions. Also, you must be able to work independently under minimum supervision and must demonstrate high level of initiative in your work. You will gain valuable insight to the accounting process through your daily exposure and interaction with finance management.
Responsibilities:
- Obtains and maintains a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure
- Ensures all financial transactions are properly recorded in the General Ledger throughout the month including making sure they are compliant with GAAP and Organizational policies
- Maintain Fixed Assets and associated depreciation schedules; provide period reporting and ensure proper recording of new purchases and disposals including tagging assets and maintaining annual inventory
- Works with the Accounting Manager to ensure an accurate and timely monthly and year-end close, including assisting in timely completion of year-end audit
- Ensures timely reporting of all monthly financial information, including preparation and dissemination of monthly I&E and fund balances (restricted, endowment, deferred gifts, grants, and others as required). Being an expert in their assigned areas of responsibilities, the Senior Accountant must be able and willing to answer any inquiries arising from such reporting or on an ongoing basis
- Collaborates with the other departments (Grants & contracts, FP&A, Foundation, Administrative Departments, and Research Labs) to support overall Organizational financial goals and objectives
- Collaborates and develops effective relationships with intercompany partners at UPMC and University of Pittsburgh to ensure seamless flow of information to aid accurate and timely recording of intercompany transactions and their reconciliation
- Ensures reconciliation of balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis and takes proactive steps to resolve outstanding items
- Assists management in development and implementation of new accounting and control policies and procedures to enhance the workflow of the department
- Acts as a mentor for accountants or administrative staff
- Supports Director of Finance and Accounting Manager with special projects and workflow process improvements
- Performs other job duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or related business field required. CPA/MBA preferred.
- Minimum of three years of related work experience required.
- Microsoft Office spreadsheet application required and PeopleSoft General Ledger proficiency preferred.
- Not-for-profit experience and exposure to federal grants desirable
