University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring a full-time Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner to help support the CCM Department within Scaife Hall. This position will work a variety of shifts each week rounding within the hospital.

Twelve month postgraduate training program for APPs sponsored by the UPMC Department of Critical Care Medicine. This program is designed to attract and provide advanced training in critical care medicine to highly motivated physician assistants (PAs) and certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNPs). Based on the Department’s Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program (MCCTP) for physicians, the residents will train alongside their physician counterparts to learn intensive care medicine across a broad patient population including medical, general/cardiac/specialty surgical, trauma, solid organ transplant, and neurocritical care among others.

The goals of our program are to recruit high-quality, motivated advanced practice providers; provide residents with world-class training in critical care medicine based on current scientific knowledge of the field; provide residents with a unique critical care learning experience tailored to his/her professional interests and goals and to develop efficient, knowledgeable and confident providers capable of effective patient management within his/her scope of practice.

Staff Level:
The Staff Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner and a member of the care delivery team. The Staff APP is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Staff APP has responsibility, authority and accountability for the provision of care through supervision by and collaboration with a physician. The Staff APP manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members. The role of the Staff APP encompasses the beginnings of leadership, partnership, collaboration and supervision. The Staff APP establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Staff APP begins to demonstrate a commitment to the community and to their healthcare profession.

The successful candidate will be placed according to years and months of experience for employment purposes.

Responsibilities:
  • Consults with attending physician or designee upon the identification of significant unexpected changes in patient status.
  • Performs selected invasive patient care procedures based on the patients' needs as determined collaboratively by the physician supervisor and the Allied Health Credentialing Committee of the medical staff. Documents procedures, patient response/s and results in the patient record.
  • As a graduate medical learner, follow work hour requirements set forth by the academic program as determined by the program director and the Medical Director within the work hour guidelines as set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
  • Participates in an educational program provided by the UPMC business unit, and is expected to satisfy the academic requirement of the program, as determined by the Program Director and the Medical Director.
  • Under the direction and in consultation/collaboration with the attending physician or designee, diagnoses medical conditions and plans interventions, documents and communicates information to the health care team, and documents patient care services with a daily dictated or electronically generated note that conforms to documentation guidelines.
  • Provides instructions, information and support to the patient/family regarding medications and treatments.
  • Administers medications and injections in compliance with state law and hospital guidelines.
  • Performs complete physical examinations and obtains complete medical history and records findings. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Interprets and integrates data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan for critically ill or injured patients.
  • Provides continuity of patient care in collaboration with other health care professionals as appropriate.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the patients served as specified below
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span
  • Possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs
  • Provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures
Special Skills and Abilities Required: 
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment
  • Handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment
  • Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care
  • Good clinical judgment
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and lead others in application of acceptable standards of practice
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients
This position is dependent upon successful attainment and maintenance of hospital privileges, if applicable to the Business Unit practice.

Licensure, Education, Certifications, and Clearances

CRNP: 
  • The successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program is required
  • BSN, MSN is preferred
  • Professional nursing experience and/or nurse practitioner experience is preferred
  • Current state RN license and CRNP certification are required
  • National certification, eligible for licensure by Pennsylvania board of nursing, eligible for certification as a CRNP by Pennsylvania state board of nursing
  • Current CPR certification is required
  • Act 33 Clearance will be required 
  • Act 73 Clearance will be required 
  • Act 34 Clearance required
  • ACNP Preferred
PA: 
  • A graduate of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the physician assistant (ARC-PA) is required
  • BS or MS candidate is preferred
  • Experience as a physician assistant and/or experience in a clinical setting is preferred
  • Current state PA license certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required
  • Current CPR certification is required
  • Act 33 Clearance will be required 
  • Act 73 Clearance will be required
  • Act 34 Clearance required
