Under the direction of management and more senior members of the team, Enterprise Infrastructure Technology is hiring a Systems Engineer – Intermediate. This position will be part of the Unix Support team, responsible for provisioning and support of UPMC’s IBM AIX and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and other Linux solutions.  The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience on AIX and Linux systems. The team member will be further responsible for day-to-day server operations, providing end user support, contribute to team documentation, projects and seeks out process improvement. Acts as liaison to vendors for advanced troubleshooting.

  • Project Management - Complete assigned project-related tasks with limited guidance. Responsible for time tracking and updating documentation.

  • Core Technology Concepts - Responsible for understanding of moderately complex technologies and their use. Demonstrates initiative to learn and expand upon knowledge.
  • Maintenance/Upgrades - Follow documented procedures for maintenance and upgrades. Assist senior team members with upgrade and maintenance plans. Responsible for assisting with Disaster Recovery Plan.
  • Self Development - Responsible for continuous self-study, training's, partnering with more senior members of team, and/or seeking out opportunities to broaden scope to stay up to date with industry and organizational trends. Seeks feedback from senior team members for development and effectively incorporates feedback into work and behaviors
  • End user support - Resolve moderately complex end-user support issues with the assistance of more senior level team members.


  • Typically has 2+ years' experience with complex systems environments through education or practical experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform standard IT procedures and protocols. 
  • This position may be required to maintain a 24/7 off hours support as part of a rotation within the team. 
  • The frequency varies based upon the number of colleagues in the rotation.
Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Basic knowledge (2+ years) of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and/or IBM AIX
  • Has a good understanding of Kubernetes, RH OpenShift and / or any other container based platform.
  • Red Hat or other relevant certifications a plus
  • Strong working knowledge of IT best practices, including change control management
  • Experience with AIX or Linux servers in a virtualized environment
  • Additional experience related to other operating systems Ubuntu, Fedora, SUSE, openSUSE a plus
  • Significant experience with scripting, including Bash, Python, Ruby, Perl
  • Experience with Red Hat Satellite 6.X a plus
  • Experience with Red Hat Insights, IBM NIM, PowerVC is a plus
  • Knowledge about configuration management tools, such as Ansible,Puppet etc.
  • Familiarity with SELinux, load balancing, firewalls, DNS, etc.
  • Good understanding of systems integration to design systems meeting needs of the enterprise
  • Supports our servers through the life-cycle:  Provisioning, Supporting, Updating, Patching, and Retirement of servers.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, critical thinking skills and strong technical learning aptitude is a plus
  • Strong team player capable of working in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
