Sr. Data Scientist - Health Economics


UPMC Health Plan has an exciting opportunity for a Sr. Data Scientist in its Department of Health Economics, located in downtown Pittsburgh at the U.S. Steel Tower. The Sr. Data Scientist develops, implements, and monitors advanced analytic, medical informatics, and predictive modeling tools for health care programs.


  • Serves as a consultant to ensure coordination in systems planning, development and implementation between utilization management and other areas needing reporting, development, information systems, and external organizations.
  • Collaborates with health plan and health system staff.
  • Designs, develops, and implements health care analytic and biomedical modeling programs.
  • Defines methodologies for reporting and evaluates software requirements needed to support analytic reporting.
  • Implements plans for capturing and creating new data elements, working with Health Plan CIO and information services staff.
  • Identifies staffing needs to enhance modeling and reporting abilities and participates in recruitment.
  • Coordinates informatics activities to facilitate reporting and take advantage of health system information and technology.
  • Identifies and implements education and training program to address needs of health plan employees relative to health care informatics and modeling.
  • Monitors and oversees reporting process to assure business owner needs are met.
  • Makes recommendations of reporting, based upon industry standards and competitor knowledge.
  • Identifies business owners with health care informatics needs and works with them to define reports and reporting schedule.
  • Converse with and provide guidance on the selection and use of modeling software and programs.



  • Advanced degree in Bioinformatics, Statistics, Economics, Decision Science, Health Services Research or related field. Ph.D. (highly preferred) or Master of Science Degree with at least five years of modeling and program design experience.
  • Minimum of five years' experience in the development, implementation and oversight of models related to health services research and medical information programs, or related work experience required.
  • Knowledge of statistical and reporting methodologies.
  • Strong planning and analytic design skills.
  • Expertise in working with health insurance claims databases.
  • Ability to work with advanced data analytic software and models.
  • Ability to design programs to analyze complicated scenarios.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
