Lead, Business Analyst

Description

UPMC Health Plan has an exciting opportunity for a Lead, Business Analyst in its Quality Analytics team in the HEDIS Improvement department, located in downtown Pittsburgh at the U.S. Steel Tower.


The Lead, Business Analyst will provide insights into HEDIS data and analytics to various areas of UPMC Health Plan. The Lead BA serves as a technical resource and subject matter expert in the HEDIS measure data as well as providing ability to gather information and answer questions for other areas. The Lead, Business Analyst works as part of a highly cohesive team to deliver top notch analytics and data to the organization. 


This person will be responsible for managing their work load to meet deadlines and expectations of working with the rest of the team on development, as well as QC activities. Additionally, he/she will serve as a process expert and provide training and support to other staff as needed. In addition, the Lead, Business Analyst may assume supervisory support as needed, and must use their knowledge and expert understanding of analytics, clinical data and other information generated by numerous sources to identify opportunities to improve clinical and HEDIS Rates performance.


Furthermore, the position requires the ability to articulate findings to internal and external audiences, implement the solutions, and track and monitor progress. These functions must be done while also weighing the practical considerations and potential barriers that need to be overcome to successfully implement new programs and processes.



Responsibilities:

 

  • Experience working in a healthcare environment working for a healthcare provider or payer organization preferred.
  • Advanced to expert SQL knowledge and experience data mining complex data sets and large databases preferred.
  • Business Intelligence & Data Visualization experience with Tableau, Power BI, or comparable tools.
  • Knowledge of Foundational Statistics, tools such as Python, R, Stata, SAS highly desired.
  • Knowledge of HEDIS measurement, healthcare quality background highly desirable.
  • Manage client expectations and timelines for analytic deliverables.
  • Ability to present analytic insights to clinical/operational/financial client stakeholders.
  • Be able to communicate and interface with a variety of roles (such as Executive leaders, senior directors, analytics staff, product line managers, clinical staff, etc.).
  • Knowledge and design of data models and visualizations that meet client needs (Star Schema, Kimball).
  • Lead technical projects by providing technical oversight from a best practices viewpoint.
  • Work with other data analysts to train and mentor on data tools and methodologies.
  • Experience developing visualizations that consume data models for non-technical users.
  • Have experience with development methodologies including AGILE development.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in business, mathematics, statistics, health care, management or a related field. Extensive related experience will be considered. 
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in financial and/or medical analysis, OR successful completion of the Financial Management Rotation program and one year of additional experience.
  • Experience in health care insurance or health care industry preferred, but those with relevant experience in other industries will be considered.
  • Superior computer skills are a given, with expert knowledge in Access, Excel, Crystal Reports, and other financial & statistical software packages.
  • Prior experience leading/supervising staff essential.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, enthusiasm and initiative on a daily basis. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment a must. 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, and forge strong interpersonal relationships within the department, with other departments, and with external audiences. 
  • Attention to detail is critical to the success of this position, with demonstrated competency in customer orientation and the ability to deal with ambiguity.
  • Excellent planning, communication, documentation, organizational, analytical, and problem solving abilities. 
  • Advanced mathematical skills.  
  • Ability to interpret and summarize results of various analyses in a timely and meaningful way. 
  •  Ability to effectively approach problem solving.  
  • Ability to re-engineer processes to positively impact productivity in terms of timeliness and accuracy. 
  • Ability to analyze financial & clinical results and to comprehend forecasting models.
  • Knowledge and expert understanding of all products and benefit designs of UPMC Health Plan insurance offerings, across all lines of business.
  • Well-informed and conversant with general business, economic, and clinical matters.
