Purpose:

UPMC Susquehanna and Pennsylvania College of Technology are partnering to offer an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Training program with little to no out-of-pocket tuition costs. This is made possible through grant funding provided by the PAsmart grant, through the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and have been awarded to Penn College Workforce Development to offset the cost of this program.
We have openings for four Regular Full-Time and four Casual/Per Diem EMT Trainees to join our team of outstanding healthcare professionals!
This is a paid training program lasting approximately 10-12 weeks. Students will be hired as an EMT Intern while they attend their training. Trainees will move into Emergency Medical Technician positions after successfully completing the training program and acquiring certification.
The successful candidate will enroll, attend, and successfully complete all requirements of a state approved EMT education program. A one-year work commitment to UPMC is required.

Salary Range: $14.33 - $21.39
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates cognitive competency of EMT knowledge measured by quizzes and examinations.
- Complete patient records and required state charts on all transports and transfers performed. Complete a legible narrative description of the patient's condition.
- Operate emergency vehicles, ambulances, wheelchair vans, and passenger vans under routine and emergency conditions in a safe, controlled manner in accordance with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Vehicle Code and Department of Health. Provide prehospital transportation of emergency or non-emergency patients, locally, out of region, or out of state.
- Perform support functions such as restocking and inventory maintenance of supplies and equipment, cleaning of equipment, transport of equipment, transport specimens to diagnostic testing areas, and transport of equipment (inter- and intra-departmental).
- Demonstrates psychomotor competency of EMT skills measured by completion of practical stations and field performance.
Demonstrates successful completion of the required number of field contacts, field objectives, and scheduled field hours at Susquehanna Regional EMS. - Responds to emergency and non-emergency ambulance responses to provide efficient and immediate care to include the critically injured or ill.
Selects and uses personal protective equipment appropriate to the level of anticipated hazard. - Interacts and communicates with a diverse group of patients utilizing customer service skills.
- Perform patient assessment and patient care at the basic life support level for patients of all age groups, including the initiation of prehospital care in accordance with established standards or policies to patients suffering from traumatic injuries or medical emergencies.
- Perform necessary communication with communications center, Fire/EMS units utilizing UHF, VHF and cellular telephones.
- Commit to high quality, safe work; encourage others to have similar standards. Identify processes/systems that could lead to inefficient practices, unsafe conditions, errors or adverse events. Understand that patient safety is everyone's responsibility.
Qualifications
High School Diploma (or equivalent) required.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Gain successful enrollment to a Penn College EMT program to include FISDAP entrance examination.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Successful obtainment of National Registry Certification at the EMT level within 30 days of course completion.
- Successful obtainment of Pennsylvania Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification with Emergency Medical Services Vehicle Operator (EMSVO) endorsement within 30 days of course completion.
- Successful completion of Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVDT) program.
- Successful completion of Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) program.
- Successful completion of American Heart Association CPR program for Healthcare Providers.
- Successful completion of a Hazardous Materials – Awareness level program.
- Successful completion of NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, & 800 programs.
