Temporary Hospital Screener- UPMC Mercy


UPMC Mercy is hiring Temporary Full-Time Hospital Screeners to support the hospital at our Pittsburgh, Pa location.

This position will work overnight shifts and weekends only!

With a patient centered culture, the Entrance Screener role serves as the first encounter in providing an exceptional patient and visitor experience at UPMC Mercy.  The entrance screener will be responsible for monitoring the entrances of the hospital and assuring the visitors and staff entering the building meet the health screening guidelines per policy.  As screeners, you will be responsible for screening staff, patients, and visitors for signs and symptoms of COVID while taking temperatures and controlling the flow of visitors into and out of the building.  Screeners will also hand out disposable masks to Staff/Visitors/Patients as they enter the hospital and ensure that everyone is wearing a mask/face covering at all times while inside.  The screener will also support the mission, vision, values of UPMC Mercy Hospital.


1.  Provides a positive first impression of UPMC Mercy Hospital to patients and visitors by extending a cordial welcome and assisting with needs.

2.  Screen staff/patients/visitors/vendors/students – provide a mask - take temperatures with thermal scanner – ask list of screening questions to all that enter the hospital

3.  Be familiar with protocol if anyone answers YES to any screening questions or fails thermal scan.

4.  Provides directions and wayfinding assistance to patients and visitors.

5.  Answers questions and refers patients and visitors to appropriate resources.

6.  Maintains equipment and supplies for entrances.

7.  Be familiar with current visitation policy regarding 1 support person per patient stay.


  • High School Diploma Strongly Preferred
  • Post-secondary education is preferred
  • One year of administrative support working experience is highly preferred
  • Must have proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, Word, Outlook and Powerpoint
  • Must possess typing skills and working knowledge of word processing, electronic mail/calendar and spreadsheets
  • Must possess the ability to learn and effectively use various software programs
  • General knowledge and experience with office equipment such as copiers, multi-line phone systems, fax machines and paging systems
