University of Pittsburgh Physicians is seeking a full-time Transfer Center Coordinator to support UPMC MedCall at Forbes Tower in Oakland!


UPMC MedCall serves as UPMC’s advanced physician resource for all aspects of patient transfers, referrals (urgent and non-urgent), physician consultations, and patient follow-ups. This department serves as the primary contact for referring physicians who are requesting the services of UPMC for continued patient care.


While this office is a 24-hour operation with rotating shifts, as well as rotating weekends and holidays, a current business need is primarily for second shift. While flexibility to work all required shifts is needed, the MedCall department is currently prioritizing shifts between 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. or 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. These shift hours leave flexibility to leave your days open, while being able to work full-time hours!

The Transfer Center Coordinator serves as the primary contact for referring physicians who are requesting the services of UPMC for continued patient care. This position is responsible for facilitating all patient transfers into and within the UPMC Health System by answering phones and initiating referrals and inpatient transfers from physicians and medical professionals. Responsibilities require the Transfer Center Coordinator to multitask, maintain great customer service, and identify and escalate concerns in an efficient manner.


The ideal candidate for this position will have proficient computer and typing skills, exceptional phone etiquette and communication skills, and strong organization and prioritization skills. Proficient medical terminology knowledge is strongly preferred, while direct patient care and/or medical training experience is a plus. A working knowledge of EPIC and/or Medipac is also a plus.

  • Request and coordinate all medical transportation, as necessary.
  • Provide initial information to admissions, case managers, and bed flow coordinators of incoming patients.
    • Update all admission records, as necessary.
  • Answer calls into the Terrorism Response and Information Center, and coordinate delivery of emergent information to the Corporate Command Team as part of the UPMC disaster system. 
  • Act as a primary point of contact for the National Disaster Medical System, in support of any natural disaster or WMD event in this region. 
    • This could include surge capacity and bed availability for all UPMC sites.
  • Knowledge of multiple communication methods utilized by the department.
  • Answer calls into the UPMC transfer center (MedCall) to provide a point of entry into UPMC.
    • The scope is unlimited (local and worldwide). 
  • Responsible for meeting department benchmarks related to call handling and transferring.
  • Provide and assist physicians with emergent and non-emergent transfers, consults, and other calls received. 
  • Efficiently and accurately transcribe interactions on calls.
  • All documentation on transfers to be completed and entered into department database by the end of the shift.
  • Maintain a familiarity with internal systems available and necessary in the performance of the job.
  • Maintain an awareness of services and capabilities of UPMC facilities in support of the outreach efforts of the transfer center.
  • Appropriate escalation of issues, bed assignments, and problems, as determined by department protocols.


  • High School diploma. 
  • Two years in a healthcare setting with direct patient care 
  • OR two years in a transfer center 
  • OR two years in an emergency call center 
  • OR four years in a healthcare business setting.
  • Formal medical training preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy/data entry skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Licensed LPN preferred.
  • Act 34
