Description

Purpose:

As a member of the pharmacy leadership team, this manager is expected to develop, implement and maintain clinical pharmacy services for UPMC Hamot acute care facilities. Develops, provides oversight of, and is accountable for programs and services that optimize UPMC Hamot use initiatives and activities.

Provides direction on the use and implementation of clinical pharmacy programs as they apply to medication-related technologies, information systems, safe medication management practices, cost containment, regulatory oversight and compliance, and, overall pharmacy and UPMC system excellence activities.

Supports & effectively collaborates with the UPMC Hamot Director of Pharmacy, and clinical pharmacy leaders throughout the system.


Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates and contributes to pharmacy & medication use initiatives as a member of the UPMC Hamot and UPMC system pharmacy leadership committees.

  • Collaborates and contributes to pharmacy & medication use initiatives as a member of the UPMC Hamot and UPMC system pharmacy leadership committees.
  • Assists with implementing, evaluating, and optimizing UPMC pharmacy & medication use initiatives which are pertinent to the UPMC Hamot business unit.
  • Assists with organizing and delegating P&T meetings related activities.
  • Coordinates system-wide formulary management to include review of all non-formulary requests and national formulary appeals.
  • Directs implementation and activities for Medication Use Evaluations.
  • Coordinates education and training programs designed to more fully develop the clinical skills of the pharmacy staff to advance the pharmacy initiatives.
  • Maintains overall oversight, responsibility, and activities of/for UPMC Hamot Clinical Specialists, Clinical Pharmacist, Pharmacy Residents, and pharmacy students.
  • Assists with hiring, orienting, and training of pharmacists.
  • Assists with coordinating the activities of the residency program: ensures that objectives are developed and on file for each component of the program; ensures that evaluations are completed in a timely fashion; communicates with ASHP as appropriate; successfully recruits residents into the program; provides feedback to staff, residents, specialists and leadership team; and serves as a liaison between the residents and the preceptors, staff and management.
  • Represents UPMC Hamot at national, local and department committees as appropriate and assigned.
  • Responsible for scheduling, goal-setting, evaluation of, and payroll processing for direct reports.
  • Acts as primary clinical pharmacy liaison for UPMC Hamot entities outside of current scope of responsibility.
  • Coordinates services within area of responsibility and works with other departments or areas within the pharmacy to resolve problems.
  • Maintains knowledge of and complies with applicable federal and state pharmacy laws and regulations.
  • Completes required hospital education annually.
  • Assists in organization of Clinical Pharmacy Specialist call schedule.
  • Coordinates drug utilization reviews, adverse drug reaction reporting, clinical intervention documentation and other quality assurance programs in accordance with regulatory guidance and department needs.
  • Precepts Pharmacy Residents and APPE Students
  • Performs other duties as required and/ or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • 4 years of progressive pharmacy experience, including both dispensing and consultant experience. 
  • Management experience preferred.
Preferences:

  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to speak and write clearly and report out empirical data in an accurate and organized manner;
  • Strong analysis/problem solving and critical thinking; excellent computer skills with and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PPT, Visio, etc.);
  • Strong leadership, facilitation and teaching skills;
  • Understanding of the principles of project management, including documentation and communication.
  • Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Proven ability to work independently prioritize essential tasks and meet deadlines.
