Description

Purpose:

As a member of the pharmacy leadership team, this informatics manager is expected to develop, implement and maintain informatic pharmacy services for UPMC Hamot acute care facilities. Develops, provides oversight of, and is accountable for programs and services that optimize UPMC Hamot use initiatives and activities.

Provides direction on the use and implementation of informatic pharmacy programs as they apply to medication-related technologies, information systems, safe medication management practices, cost containment, regulatory oversight and compliance, and, overall pharmacy and UPMC system excellence activities.

Supports & effectively collaborates with the UPMC Hamot Director of Pharmacy, and pharmacy informatic leaders throughout the system.


Utilizes Informatics methodologies to analyze, design, validate, test, and maintain all workflows for caregiver interactions with the EHR, and other electronic solutions as appropriate. Facilitates and leads/ supports continual optimization and ensures standardization of content and workflows across the entire system; serves as key point of contact between the clinical arena and internal technology departments/vendors.


Responsibilities:

  • Leads and supports Pharmacy Services Initiatives and practice as a pharmacy informatics subject matter expert
  • Responsible for the development, management, and maintenance of all technology, programs, policies/procedures, and goals/objectives related to the use of Pharmacy technology
  • Responsible for overseeing the clinical application functions of the Pharmacy department, including information systems coordination with corporate management, automation technology, quality management, and non-clinical training/orientation of Pharmacy personnel.
  • Leads the identification and design of consistent workflows and content with clinical stakeholders while promoting standardization, critical decision-making and helping ensure adoption of electronic solutions at UPMC Hamot.
  • Participates in collaboration with internal teams in the design, building, testing, and implementation of all electronic applications to support the financial goals of the organization.
  • Leads the Pharmacy Automation and Informatics optimization including automated dispensing cabinets, robotic medication delivery, carousels, smart pump libraries, hazardous medication disposal integration, and other pharmacy-specific software applications.
  • Maintains the information systems used by Pharmacy in such a way that the technology supports the ongoing needs of the clinicians utilizing the technology to order, review, dispense, store and document the safe use of medications for all patients.
  • Identifies opportunities to replace redundant and/ or manual processes with automated solutions; updates published workflows as appropriate.
  • Promotes an evidence-based practice model for workflow design and electronic systems throughout the organization.
  • Participates in the development of training materials through collaboration with internal Learning and Development team; integrating workflows into the training of all caregivers.
  • Establishes, facilitates, and maintains communication between all teams of caregivers, other internal resources and vendors to interpret and convey information as appropriate.
  • Provides ongoing analysis of EHR system/ workflow design for patient quality and safety; ensures clinical excellence by identifying workflow gaps in response to reported issues; updates published workflows as appropriate.
  • Facilitates/ participates on EHR upgrade teams, including decision making and prioritization on new functionality and workflows; updates published workflows as appropriate.
  • Engages/ collaborates with clinical operations across the UPMC Hamot business unit to facilitate direct patient caregiver influence on EHR/technology decisions, workflow, content and system design and implementation training and/or communication.
  • Facilitates the creation and provides ongoing maintenance of clinical reports that support the pharmacy work- flow.  Ensures that the EHR, and other electronic solutions as appropriate, comply with legal and regulatory standards.
  • Works with Pharmacy Leadership to design and implement improvements in the set up and use of technology to support the institutions' management of medication and patient safety initiatives.
  • Works with Pharmacy Leadership to develop and implement assessment tools used to measure the ability of staff to effectively use the technology employed in the management of medication.
  • Precepts Pharmacy Residents and APPE Students
  • Performs other duties as required and/ or assigned.


Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • 4 years of progressive pharmacy experience, including both dispensing and consultant experience. 
  • Management experience preferred.

  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to speak and write clearly and report out empirical data in an accurate and organized manner;
  • Strong analysis/problem solving and critical thinking; excellent computer skills with and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PPT, Visio, etc.);
  • Strong leadership, facilitation and teaching skills;
  • Understanding of the principles of project management, including documentation and communication.
  • Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Proven ability to work independently prioritize essential tasks and meet deadlines.
