Phlebotomy Team - Part Time Patient Care Technician


UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a Part-Time Patient Care Technician (Phlebotomy) to support the IV Therapy Team. The IV Therapy Team specializes in a variety of IV services. This team is a perfect fit for Patient Care Technicians who are energized by intense collaboration with colleagues. We receive a very high volume of patients and teamwork is extremely important to ensure the needs of the hospital, and patients, are met on a daily basis. We are a very fast paced unit that puts safety first. We look out for each other, hold each other accountable, and most of all help each other to get the job done!

This is a part time position with rotating hours. 24 hours per week is expected. Shift times on our unit will vary, but applicants must be available to work day, evening, and night shifts, with a variety of 8 hour and 12 hour shifts.  

  • Phlebotomy procedures will be the primary responsibility for this role. 
  • Provides explanation to patients and their families regarding services. 
  • May apply, monitor and remove patient restraints per physician's orders.
  • Adhere to all departmental and nursing policies. 
  • Inform staff and supervisors of any unusual or problematic incidents. 
  • Assists with training and orienting new employees, as applicable and assigned. 
  • Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living. 
  • Secondary responsibilities of a Patient Care Technician could include knowledge of foley removals, dressing changes, vital signs, and other nursing core assistant responsibilities.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of EIC training program OR successful completion of first year of clinical work in a nursing program.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training. 
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.A
  • bility to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to walk long distances throughout the assigned shift (5+ miles). 

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
