Senior Manager, Public Relations

Description

This senior manager works closely with the Senior Director of Public Relations to build and tell stories about UPMC Insurance Services.  The Sr. Manager should be adept at implementing media and stakeholder engagement plans; writing and editing content for press releases, byline articles, blogs, and social media content; creating talking points for media engagements and speaking opportunities; and working with our in-house graphics department to create infographics, animations, videos and other creative content. The Sr. Manager also will supervise and mentor Public Relations staff.

 
Responsibilities:
  • Help drive messaging and narrative development for UPMC Health Plan efforts externally, including drafting blog posts, media pitches, talking points, launch materials, slides, speeches, etc.
  • Secure media coverage for initiatives and efforts for UPMC Health Plan in healthcare, business, tech, consumer, and broadcast media outlets. Be proficient in communicating to the media the benefits of our products, services and key messages.
  • Be a lead PR point of contact and advisor for key health initiatives, working closely with the Center for High-Value Health Care, Consumer Innovations, business owners and marketing strategists to develop and refine communications content to ensure a consistent voice and effective storytelling.
  • Establish deep-rooted relationships with internal leadership, and with key media partners, influencers, and community members to secure prime coverage for research initiatives, partnerships, launches, integrated campaigns, and community events.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong, credible relationships with all appropriate regional, national and international media. Work effectively with local and national print, broadcast, online and social media professionals to position UPMC Health Plan as a leader in health and wellness, health analytics and overall innovation in new methods, payment models and standards of care.
  • Manage media crises in assigned areas.
  • Create opportunities in the community with co-sponsored forums, events and presentations to reach and educate the public on health care initiatives and programs.
  • Plan and coordinate public relations and media relations strategy, goals and activities and work collaboratively with Corporate Public Relations to ensure consistency in efforts.


Qualifications

 
  • Undergraduate degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Political Science, English or related field required.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in a corporate/agency-based public relations, media relations, or communications-related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Extensive demonstrated writing experience is a must. 
  • Experience providing clients with strategic media counsel.
  • Experience in healthcare is preferred.
  • Ability to work calmly and maintain good judgment in fast-paced environments.
  • Ability to think, plan, and execute on multiple projects simultaneously in an organized fashion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including knowledge of AP Style and solid grasp of all basic public relations tools.
  • Superb research, writing and editing skills, and an eye for details.
  • Ability to foster internal and external relationships with subject matter experts.
  • Ability to capture the voice of leadership and communicate complex, technical, and healthcare concepts in a clear and compelling way.
  • Demonstrated self-starter with a personal drive to succeed and a commitment to quality.
  • Sound news judgment and track record of identifying and promoting stories of interest to regional, national and international media.
