Sr Clinician

Description

Purpose:
Provide research and clinical expertise in the evaluation and psychotherapy and pharmacological treatment of patients enrolled in Center studies.

Responsibilities:
  • Work collaboratively with both the primary care physician and the psychiatrist to implement an individualized treatment plan taking into consideration the patient's clinical status, the study guidelines, and patient's preferences. This entails knowledge and awareness of the study treatment algorithm, contraindications for treatment, drug interactions, etc.
  • Independently present to the primary care physician the summary of findings from the assessment instruments and guideline recommendations.
  • Travel within the community to primary care practices and occasionally seeing patient's in their residence when they are unable to come to the clinic or primary care practice.
  • Provide psychotherapeutic and medication therapies to patients. This will also involve education to patients regarding their illness and prescribed medications.
  • Assume on-call status for emergencies arising after normal working hours.
  • Contribute to formal reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Recruit subjects into Center protocols. This will involve networking with Primary care offices and staff, UPMC departments, community agencies, consumer groups, and other health professionals, and developing PR. Plans and develops promotional materials and strategies for the Centers.
  • Assist in development of new protocols and related procedures.
  • Perform initial and on-going psychiatric evaluations, including PEF's, SCID, and various dementia, mood, and physical evaluations.
  • Plan, develop, and/or implement educational seminars and workshops to health professionals and consumers, patients and families.
  • Participate in on-going reliability studies.
  • Independently develop and implement ideas for program PR.
  • Complete data forms on time and accurately. Ensure each primary care participant's study folder is complete, and returned to the study site for data entry.
  • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with primary care staff. This requires promoting subject recruitment, ensuring protocol adherence, and at times, independent trouble shooting and problem solving.
  • Assist in obtaining informed consent. Appropriate recruitment requires being aware of inclusion/exclusion criteria and clearly explaining the purpose of the study, study procedures, confidentiality issues, and risks and benefits.
  • Maintain completeness of data collection; maintain accurate and concise records.
  • Liaison with and maintain clear communication with investigators, program director, and staff regarding patient/family issues/progress, and protocol and data management issues.
This position is grant funded.

Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Psychology, Social Work or Counseling required. Other human service fields of study may be considered with coursework of at least 12 credits in Psychology, Social Work or Counseling. Doctoral level degree preferred.
  • Clinical knowledge and effective skills in the assessment and care of psychiatric and/or geriatric patients.
  • 3 years psychiatric research experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills in psychiatric diagnosis and implementation of clinical research procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiology and psychosocial needs of patients in the performance of specified research procedures and interviews.
  • Ability to function independently and to be flexible with change.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with other disciplines.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to accurately, therapeutically, and safely administer medications and carry out medical technical procedures and will be cognizant of: a) existing pathology and immediate condition of the subject, b) drug dosage action, side-effects, contraindications, c) potential physiological effects and/or responses including therapeutic, ineffective, adverse or toxic reactions.
  • Ability to learn numerous protocol criteria and procedures and adhere to protocol designs.
  • Attention to detail is a must.
  • May in the course of their job duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with medications is allowed.
