Thank you for your interest in the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh fellowship training program in cleft, craniofacial and special care orthodontics. The program is located within the Cleft-Craniofacial Center at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and has an academic affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Department of Plastic Surgery. The orthodontic division provides team-based, birth-adulthood clinical care for patients affected by cleft-craniofacial conditions. The scope of care includes: pre-surgical infant orthopedics and NAM for the cleft patient, phase I orthodontic treatment and preparation for alveolar bone grafting, comprehensive orthodontic treatment, including orthognathic surgical planning and preparation, and infant ear molding for neonatal auricular deformities. Weekly team meetings, didactic and case-based conference, literature review, dedicated research time and teaching are integral to the fellowship.

Purpose:
The Cleft-Craniofacial Orthodontic Fellow at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh will work in collaboration with Cleft-Craniofacial, Orthodontic, and Dental teams to provide care to patients with craniofacial birth defects and other anomalies. There is integral involvement with a large interdisciplinary cleft-craniofacial team, with formal exposure to team members and their respective roles. Partnership with the dental team includes teaching in the Pediatric Dental Residency program. The goal of the fellowship is to prepare the fellow for the orthodontic responsibilities in a cleft-craniofacial team.

Qualifications

Responsibilities:
  • Examine, diagnose, treat dental and skeletal malocclusions and oral cavity anomalies associated with cleft-craniofacial orthodontics.
  • Prepare and study diagnostic records such as medical/dental histories, plaster and digital dental models, photos of a patient's face and teeth, and X-rays in order to develop patient treatment plans. Provide patients with proposed treatment plans.
  • Design, fabricate, and deliver orthodontic appliances. Participate in pre-surgical orthopedic therapy for infants with cleft-lip and palate, including nasoalveolar molding (NAM). Participate in pre-surgical work-up, surgical planning, splint fabrication and model surgery for craniofacial surgical procedures.
  • Adjust orthodontic appliances periodically in order to produce and maintain normal occlusal function.
  • Coordinate orthodontic services with other dental and medical services.
  • Work collaboratively with attending physicians to provide consultative services.
  • Serve as an instructor for hospital in-service orthodontic education programs and for hospital sponsored Continuing Medical Education programs. Serve as an instructor in the Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program.
  • Instruct pediatric dental residents and technical assistants in orthodontic procedures and techniques.
Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited dental school and orthodontic residency program.
  • Eligibility for a PA dental license.
  • Ability to work in a confidential environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines.
  • Certificate in Orthodontics, or a letter from the program director confirming anticipated date of graduation.
