University of Pittsburgh Physicians, Thoracic Surgery is hiring a full-time Physician Assistant Specialty - HLESI to support our Thoracic Surgery Services at UPMC Shadyside and UPMC Presbyterian. The daylight weekly schedule will offer 10-hour shifts, with some rotating weekends. No Call. The primary role is operating room and inpatient rounding services. Credentialed Sites: PUH, SHY, PAS, STM, MER. Robotics experience preferredFive years recent PA surgical experience preferred.

Purpose:
Under appropriate supervision and in accordance with state laws, manage patients with a high degree of autonomy in a clinical setting. The successful candidate will be placed according to years and months of experience for employment purposes.

Responsibilities:

 

Maintenance of accurate medical records in regards to daily orders, charting and discharge summaries.; maintenance of efficient discharge flow between ICU and the step-down unit.

 

  • When appropriate assist in the operating room as first or second assistant under supervision of a physician ;Minimally invasive endovein harvesting perform within the first 12 months of employment; Implantable defibrillator interrogation/reprogramming/modification.
  • Provide clinical direction, advice or mentorship to an ACGME resident / fellow that reflects and sustains the management practices of the patients' attending physician(s) and assures continuity of care.
  • Must be credentialed and regular perform: Liaison between patient, family, attending physician and remaining healthcare team to insure continuity of care. Assist in OR, record and present pertinent data to the supervising physician as indicated. Manage the complexities of the all cardiac and transplant surgeries of acutely ill patients.
  • Identification of rehabilitation needs in the step-down care of the cardiac patient in regards, but limited to, physical, mental and counseling needs and any required follow-up including specific follow up testing requirements
  • Special procedures to include, Thoracentesis; Pericardialcentesis; VEnous/arterial cut down for peripheral access; Insertion of Chest Tube; Wound closure; Incision of skin; Intubation - endotracheal; removal of drainage systems; removal of temporary pacing wires.
  • Complete comprehensive histories and physicals and identify pertinent pre-operative and post-operative risks and communicate those conditions that require the immediate attention of the supervising physician. ; Identify normal and abnormal findings in the history and physical exam ; review findings for the management of pre-operative; post-operative patients in CTICU as well as step-down units.
  • Perform the responsibilities of the 1st level CRNP/PA. Under appropriate supervision and in accordance with state laws, manages patients with a high degree of autonomy in a clinical setting.


This position is dependent upon successful attainment and maintenance of hospital privileges, if applicable to the Business Unit practice.

 


Qualifications

Graduate of physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the physician assistant (ARC-PA) required. Robotics experience preferred. Two years recent PA Surgical experience preferred.


Experience as physician assistant and/or experience in clinical setting preferred. Prefer Clinical rotation in surgery. Clinical rotation in cardiac surgery highly desirable.Excellent communication skills for dealing with family members with life threatening problems, e.g., ventricular assist devices, transplants, and type-A dissections.

 

Able to maintain poise and composure in life-threatening surgical situations such as cardiac arrestAble to operate with magnificationAble and willing to work rotating shifts, weekends and to provide call coverageAble to manage patients with extreme levels of acuity in the CTICU and post-operative environments of Cardiac Surgery and Transplantation within the first 12 months of employmentThis position is dependent upon successful attainment and maintenance of hospital privileges, if applicable to the Business Unit practice.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
